The availability of quality and great education is already an open source for anyone interested and motivated to learn. However, the increasing cost of living and high tuition fee have led to a decline in enrollment rates and the failure of some students to complete their education. As a result, there has been a push for the government to make education free to everyone. Although free education will increase the level of literacy among the citizens, it has dire consequences that can compromise its effective implementation.

Free education can ensure access to education to all individuals in the society especially the poor. It can encourage a higher enrollment rate and increase the level of literacy in a country. Majority of the parents wants to send their children to school to get a quality education but in some cases, they are forced to deprive their children even from attaining basic education due to lack of resources. Therefore, the implementation of free education by the government can ensure equal learning opportunities for all the students.

Although free education can be beneficial to society, it has some limitations that can compromise its effective performance. One limitation of free education is that it can directly affect the government budget and the teacher’s salary. In many countries, the tuition fees are used to fund the government budget and help in payment of the teacher’s salary. With the elimination of tuition fee, it can prove difficult to compensate teachers and this can make them look for alternative jobs that are well paid. In addition, it can lead to an increase in the student to teacher ratio and this can also compromise the quality of education. Also, the government might not be able to get enough funds to build new schools to accommodate the increase in the number of students.

In conclusion, it is evident that the implementation of free education has both benefits and limitations. As a result, it is advisable that the decision to introduce free tuition should based on the appropriate mechanisms and implemented wisely and sensible to ensure that it suits the needs of all people.
