Political science is an academic discipline which delves into the relationship between political institutions and people. Aristotle is the known to be the founding father of the political science domain together with his teacher, Plato, as they were concerned with the decline of Athens (Stadelmann, 2020). Some of the social sciences that political science draws from include sociology, economics, anthropology, and psychology.
There are questions as to whether political science, as a discipline, is relevant today. Political scientists face increasing demands to showcase the relevance of their research especially beyond the confinements of academia. The inherent problem with political science is that it spends too much energy and time fighting internal schisms while under-nurturing its position within the general social context. This is one of the main reasons why over the recent years, the discipline has failed to promote and stimulate political discourse. Particularly in a globalized world, political science is of significance and thus the need to contextualize the discipline and make it more relevant to the modern world.

Political science can enhance active citizenship as those who study political science are informed on how the local and international politics work and how it affects their day-to-day activities. This means that they will be capable of making informed decisions on how to promote and sustain democracy especially within their community. By understanding how the political systems work and how it is associated with other aspects of their lives, individuals would understand the means of protesting and collecting petitions, undertaking community activities such as volunteering, and undertaking the most conventional of political engagements such as campaigning and voting (Hoskins, 2014). Therefore, active citizens are those that understand the role of politics in their lives and thus try to use it to their advantage and that of the community.
