Who is the audience?

In a concept essay, the audience are the people that the writer is targeting to address or reach in form of written texts. The analysis of the audience involves the examination of the significant components defining the constitution and the general characteristics of the audience. In preparation of the essay or texts, the writer or author studies the audience so as to be well versed with the message as well as the use of appropriate language that is common to the readers or audience. 1

How does the audience ’ s prior knowledge, values, and beliefs influence the production and reception of the text?

The audience’s prior knowledge, values, and beliefs influence the production and reception of the text in many ways. A common ground with the audience can be achieved by aligning the text, information or essay with the knowledge and beliefs of the audience. Complete new information or usage of unfamiliar terms will definitely confuse the audience and hence leading to lack of interest in the text 2 . Knowing the composition of the audience and what they already know or believe enables the writer or author to carefully come up with the message in an appropriate manner by adapting to their background and degree of understanding.

Due to their pre-existing knowledge, values, and beliefs, in order to have a positive influence on them, the writer ’ s prior analysis should help him to figuratively get into the minds of the audience and see the world from their point of view. When people choose to read a certain text, they automatically become the audience members and have some expectations on the topic of discussion and at times also the writer.. Going against the expectations of the audience may have a negative influence on the effectiveness of the message.

1-RE: Rhetorical Situation & the Concept Essay

On who is the audience, it also important to align your message to fit the general public since the essay will be read by many people and not only the target audience. For instance, when addressing teenagers, it is also important to consider the fact that the information will reach the elderly and the minors. This will ensure approval by the general public such as parents. Explicit content to the teenagers might be criticized by parents despite the fact that they were not the target audience.

2-RE: Rhetorical Situation & the Concept Essay

On the why question, it important to consider the writer ’ s intentions of delivering the message to the audience before choosing how to deliver it. The main goal should be to bring a positive impact on the audience and leave them thinking about the message. For instance, if one is trying to address the alcoholics, it is not wise to rebuke them but give them a few tips and the negative outcomes of being an alcoholic. This will make them think, feel challenged and let them make their own decision.
