According to Dweck, many parents are getting it all wrong when it comes to the secret of raising smart kids. Dweck begins by stating that, “ Our society worships talent, and many people assume that possessing superior intelligence or ability—along with confidence in that ability—is a recipe for success”. According to the author’s view, this is wrong perception and that there are other ways in which kids can be raised to become smart and achieve success in life. One of the ways in which success of kids can be enhanced is by encouraging children to work hard. Parents should also give good praise so that children develop a mentality of hard work to success. Lastly, parents should encourage their kids to confront their deficiencies and take them as opportunities for improvement. In my view, I totally agree with the author in terms of the above mentioned strategies to enhance success in kids as they grow up.

In life, success is a relative issue and should not only be linked to ability and talent. Success can as well be achieved by people who are not born intelligence, talented or able. Such people can achieve success through hard work and determination. According to the reading, there are two classes of learners. The two classless include the mastery oriented and the helpless. Helpless learners tend to develop a fixed mind set and believe that success is in their ability and therefore does not believe in hard work for improvement. Mastery oriented learners on the other hand tend to have growth mind set and therefore tend to change with the conditions in the surrounding. I tend to agree with Dweck on the fact that fixed mind sets have high chances of failure due to low motivation as compared to growth mind set individuals who will strive to correct mistakes and move steps forward.

When raising kids, it is what parents expose them to that determine their route for success. This is another area that I personally concur with the author of the reading. Kids tend to learn by acquiring information within their surroundings. As parents, it is important to watch which examples you give to children in form of praise as children will develop attitudes depending on what parents expose them to. It is advised that parents use examples related to growth mind set situations as compared to fixed mind set situations. Children who are exposed to growth mind set situations and examples tend to develop an attitude towards the same as they grow up thus becoming a growth oriented mind set. Similarly, telling kids about success stories which lies towards fixed mind set will actually make children to develop that very fixed mind set and thus low chances of success.

The success of the kids depends on how they are coached to face challenges and realities in the course of life path. Kids grow with various deficiencies. However, the approach that the kid takes on his or her weaknesses is what determines success. This is another well illustrated point that makes me agree with the author. Indeed, for parents to raise smart kids, they should make their kids realize their deficiencies and teach them proper strategies to deal with them. Kids who are not taught how to deal with deficiencies will easily succumb to them and record failure. However, kids who are taught to confront deficiencies in a positive manner tend to record high chances of success.

In conclusion, the whole idea of raising smart kids lies in the hands of parents and the environment that they expose their children to. Like for the case of Jonathan in the reading, he happened to be an intelligent boy but ended up failing because of lack of motivation and being convinced that success can only come from ability. Therefore, I tend to concur with the author as she is justified to support the growth oriented mind set learners as compared to fixed mindset learners.
