The social progress index thoroughly measures a country’s performance on a wide variety of social and environmental indicators. It captures three dimensions of social progress, which are basic human needs, opportunity and foundations of wellbeing. According to the Social Progress Index of 2017, which was developed by the Social Progress Imperative, India came in the Lower-Middle Tier. 

India, which ranked at number 93 among the 128 countries, had an aggregate score of 58.39. It scored 66.74 for Basic Human Needs and 61.15 on Foundations of Wellbeing. However, it scored very poorly on tolerance and inclusion at 26.36, access to advanced education at 32.05 and environmental quality at 47.01.

To improve their targets of achieving global goals, India can implement a number of strategies. For example, to achieve gender equality and empower women and girls, India has an Initiative known as Save the Girl Child; Educate the Girl Child that pertains to educating and protecting the girl child. This will enable the country to improve their social progress variable of early marriages, which ranked at 112 among the 128 countries. By signing the Climate Change Agreement, India shows commitment to reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and improving of their social progress indicator of deaths attributable to outdoor air pollution, which ranked at 125. 

Among the most challenging sustainable development goals in India is inequality, which can be seen by their social progress indicator in tolerance and inclusion that ranked 123 among 128 countries. Although the country has succeeded in eliminating social sins such us untouchability, child and widow marriages, it still has yet to achieve equality, a classless society and greater respect for humanity. The gap between the rich and poor in India has also been seen to increase.
