Question 2: Go to http://www.drugabuse.gov/drugs-abuse/emerging-trends and describe what the emerging drug trends are.

In the past few years, a drug called Loperamide that is often issued over the counter has been abused. If taken in large amounts in combination with other substances it induces psychoactive effects. There is also the administration of fake pain and anxiety drugs, which contain fentanyl. Fentanyl is a deadly opioid and its effects are stronger than even heroin. A small amount may lead to overdose and subsequent death. Synthetic cannabinoid products that are available under various brand names such as “Nice guy” are also abused lately. The main ingredient in this chemical is “synthetic marijuana” whose effects are adverse compared to the natural marijuana. Finally, reports from Indiana indicated that the rampant cases of HIV were as a result of drug abuse (National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), 2015).

Question 3: How would you approach a friend with a substance abuse problem? What are some things that would be helpful and things that might make the situation worse?

First, I would try to win his/her friendship. Most drug addicts tend to operate in solitude, which often make them feel depressed. Secondly, I would persuade him/her to be gradually reducing the amount of drug he/she consumes after vividly explaining to him/her the hazards that addiction posse to his /her life. Thirdly, I would encourage him to visit a counseling unit that would give moral support to him/her in addition to explaining further on what the addict ought to do to shun drugs. During that entire period, I would not be offensive because that would worsen the situation.

Question 4: Go to http://www.nrepp.samhsa.gov/ and describe one best practice, prevention or treatment, for substance abuse, alcohol or drugs, for young adults.

Prevention is the best method that will help to curb the problem of drug abuse. The noble practice is the selective prevention strategy, which includes cultural awareness and competency (SAMHSA, 2016). This strategy would help young adults to nurture the knowledge, attitude as well as skills that would enable them to gain moral wisdom. This would help them to make meaningful choices or even shun behaviors that threaten their lives.

Question 5: Why is chemical dependency seen as a “permanent”, chronic condition?

Chemical dependency is viewed as a permanent chronic condition because it affects the Central Nervous System (CNS) of the brain and that interferes with the interactions within the various structures of the brain. Malfunctioning would then set in since the hippocampus will reduce in volume, the white matter will be impaired and cognitive performance will be reduced. Later on, the memory would be working spatially, attention would be reduced and executive functioning may decrease. Notably, some of these changes are irreversible.
