Bad bosses ruin the success of employees and organizations. Bosses play an important role in any organizations they directly determine the success of a firm. However, many types of bosses are broadly categorized as good and bad bosses. Every employee always wants to have a good boss, but there are instances where a worker may encounter a bad boss. Some of the major characteristics of bad bosses include failure to give clear direction, do not appreciate employees, and they are not good in giving feedback to employees. As a result, a bad boss has an adverse effect or impact on employees and their actions or behaviors may fail the entire organization. A bad boss is a problem for employees because they do not provide a favorable working environment for professional growth, make employees pick up bad habits, and he or she can cause psychological harms.
Many employees have not succeeded in their career because they have a bad boss. No employee expects a bad boss to provide opportunities for promotions or training, which are essential for career advancement and development. No one expects a bad boss to come up with initiatives that are aimed at recognizing top performers in the organization. Many promotions are based on merit and performance of employees in the workplace. However, this is not likely to be implemented by a bad boss as he or she may choose to promote the people he likes or cronies or top performers (Green, 2014). A bad boss is likely to see top performers in the organization as threats to his success or interest, resulting in a lot of frustrations and bullying. At the same time, training opportunities enable employees to learn new skills that can improve their performance, which leads to promotion. Nonetheless, a bad boss never gives it juniors the opportunity to attend training sessions because he is either incompetent or a crook who does not have proper management or leadership skills. Bad bosses are the main hindrance to employees' professional growth and development. Therefore, having a bad boss is a problem for many employees (Green, 2014).

Imagine working with a bad boss consistently for ten years without changing the workplace. It is possible for a bad boss to influence workers negatively (Green, 2014). Employees who have worked with a bad boss are likely to pick bad habits because of a change in personality or behaviors. For instance, working with a bad boss who is oppressive for a long period may make an employee to develop the habit of not sharing his or her opinions, ideas or views when interacting with colleagues in a team. Such employees may not point out mistakes even if it is affecting other workers or the organization. For such an employee, working with a bad boss has influenced him to keep his ideas and thoughts to himself. Developing bad habits or unfavorable personality may lead to problems when an employee moves to another organization or department (Green, 2014). For example, failure to share ideas or thoughts can make an employee a mediocre team player, which may affect his productivity and relationship with others in the workplace. A bad boss creates a long-term change in the behavior and personality of an employee that may be problematic in the future.
Some employees have suffered severe depression while others have committed suicide while working with a bad boss. Bullying is one of the major characteristics of a bad boss, which may cause a lot of psychological harm to employees ( Abbasi, Hollman & Hayes, 2008) . A bad boss is not sensitive to the needs of others, and they can subject a worker into psychological torture, resulting in depression. For instance, a bad boss can give an employee a lot of work that should be completed within a short period. As a result, an employee may be subjected to a lot of pressure that may lead to anxiety or depression. The problem may become worse when an employee is also facing job insecurity. An employee who is suffering from depression or emotional instability is not likely to be productive in the workplace. Consequently, such employees can be sacked because of poor performance, even though the cause of the problem is a bad boss. Thus, working with a bad boss posse a lot of mental health risks to employees, which may lead to other consequences like termination of employment.
In summing up, having a bad boss is a problem that should be addressed because it affects employees' career success, can lead to dangerous behaviors and unfavorable personality in the workplace, and may result in health risks like depression and anxiety. Bad bosses affect the productivity of employees, which may end up negatively affecting the general performance of an organization. Therefore, organizations should strive not to have bad bosses. Any manager who has been identified as a bad boss should be replaced to improve the productivity of employees as well as their professional growth. Having a bad boss is one of the critical challenges that employees face the workplace.
