The waters are too blue and calm
I wish they could express my sturm und drang
As I gaze upon them, I accept my fate
To go away with Diego as his mate
Isn’t it what happened to Maria
Promises of love without fear
They said she would be happy with her betrothed
They said she would never feel distraught
So said mama and papa
But look at Maria’s torture
No comfort or love for my sister
The promises of love without fear
Now my turn has finally come
Tomorrow Diego takes me from home
To face a future storm or calm
I can’t tell which will come
Just like Maria found a storm
And these are the fruits of marriage
Promises of love without fear
The poem demonstrates the struggles of you women who get into marriage expecting the best but receiving the worst. Emilia represents the young woman who has to deal with an arranged marriage not knowing what to expect. It could be the sources of happiness for her or the cause of her misery just like her sister Maria. She is being forced into marriage with someone she does not know and is expected to make the best out of their union. However, Jan Ilhan (2017) identify that forced marriages are the source of emotional and psychological abuse especially for the woman. This is clearly evident in Maria’s marriage which is a source of her agony, sadness and weight loss. Rauf et al. (2013) recognize that when young women such as Maria and Emilia get into these marriages, they are at increased risk of depression and other mental health conditions due to all the difficulties they have to endure including caring for their husbands, their homes, their extended family and their children with no one to care for them. It is probably what awaits Emilia as she gets married to Diego who her parents think is the best man for her. She however does not know the type of man Diego is and needs to be prepared for anything. Whether her marriage results in happiness or sadness it will be for the rest of her life.
