The state of the union address in Trump's administration continues to offer political drama, especially from critics. The annual message delivered by the president at the beginning of each year with the aim of presenting a budget, economic report, and propositions by the president on critical legislative agendas and national priorities continuing to attract controversy in interpretations and meanings. Trump's state of the Union address, the second in his presidency to a joint session of the United States Congress came after the month-long shutdown of the government (Cillizza, 2019). The closure was caused by security concerns and finding funding for the construction of the southern border with Mexico.
Many critics provide analysis of the address as having no policy content and accusing the president of the use of clichés such as ‘God bless America’ and a long list of thanks with no policy content (Milligan, 2019). However various policies were addressed on health, the law, and crime, trade, immigration, and defense. In health, the president requested for Senate approval of funding for the elimination of HIV and AIDS epidemic in the United States and engagement in research for childhood cancer ( Dwidar et al., 2019). On health, the prescription drug pricing is also a policy that was addressed by the president urging the Congress to pass the legislation that will enhance the delivery of fair and transparent prices of medication to patients.

The policy on trade with a focus on infrastructure development was addressed by president Trump especially on the present bill for significant infrastructure investments to replace the American aging infrastructure. Thus the address also evaluated immigration, crime rate, laws and the defense with viable and beneficial economic and social policies proposed by for fulfillment of the American people (Milligan, 2019). Also, the abortion policy was directly addressed making Trump the first president to make a discussion in the State Union Address.
However, the State Union Address is accused of neglecting essential policies. Critics and democrats which analysis on the overlooked and ignored policies availed various lists. They emphasize that policies on civil rights, transportation, and government operations were forgotten entirely. Claims indicated that other strategies such as labor, energy, social welfare science and communication, commerce, housing environment, agriculture, and education were ignored altogether (Dwidar et al., 2019). The presentation by President Trump for his case for the Mexican border wall emphasizing the need for the wall to improve American safety and seeking approval for its funding is a policy likely to be overlooked and ignored.
The democratic response which has entirely ruled out the approval of funding of wall and the delayed confirmation of nominees has interfered with the spirit of compromise and unity called or by the president in his address. The Democrats’ argument which lead to the shutdown of the government framing the cause of the economic slowdown as the president in the public sphere. Led by the Democratic speaker Nancy Pelosi, the Democrats continue to undermine the presidency as they engage in him in political and personal battles ( Dwidar et al., 2019). The battles by democrats significantly compromise safety due to their assumptions on immigrants as only victims of violence and failing to focus on exploitation of the opportunity by terrorists and propagators of modern-day slavery compromising national security.
The recent state of the union address by the president showcased the various policies, ideas demands, and proposals of the trumps government. Despite the no policy content argument, the speech highlighted critical issues in defense, law and crime, immigration and health. Since immigration and border security remain as the central policies for President Trump, Democrats and critics have disapproved his speech as composed of policy-free comments.
