According to Machiavelli, a leader, simply, cannot have both love and fear from his subjects. Machiavelli in his views maintained that for an empire to grow and become powerful, it required a strong leader. Such leaders must also be feared by the people. Machiavelli’s viewpoints have faced a lot of criticisms in the modern world. Democracy has prevailed in the modern world, where leaders are chosen by people to serve the people and protect the rights of the people. The ideas of Machiavelli can simply not be incorporated in a democratic world or government.
Machiavelli, through his ideas, implies that the people must fear their leaders. The views of Machiavelli can only be used in a dictatorship kind of government. Such forms of governments existed years ago. In a representative democracy, people do not fear but respect their leaders. Good leaders, naturally earn the respect of the people. Leaders are chosen to represent the people and fight for their rights. Leaders strive to do what is human, what is right and what is beneficial to those he or she represents. Personally, I do not for once think that an individual who uses Machiavelli's concepts could be chosen or elected by the people. Today any leaders who appear to undermine democracy are practically removed from power by the people.
