Were you aware of these guidelines before reading about them? Where did you encounter them? Have you studied them before? Have you tried to live by them?

I was aware of nutritional guidelines. However, my knowledge about them was so limited and I only understood the basics. I first encountered them on the internet, FDA website, while looking for information on healthy eating and daily allowances of various nutrients. I briefly studied them and tried living by some of them.

"Why Shame Won't Stop Obesity

Why does Khullar claim that shame will not help reduce the obesity epidemic? Does he make a good case? Why or why not? Do you agree with him? Why or why not?

Khullar claims that shame will not help reduce obesity because the condition is encouraged by people and the system in the society. The system does not offer ways through which individuals living in the rural areas can prevent the prevalence of obesity. Khullar makes a good case because making obesity a shameful condition is not a solution to the epidemic. However, addressing the system in the society is a solution to obesity. Identifying the cause of obesity, the driving forces and other contributing factors is the solution. I agree with Khullar’s argument because focusing on the root cause of the obesity epidemic is the only long term solution.

Khullar indicates that personal responsibility for food choices is not the only factor that affects what people eat. On what does he base this conclusion? What evidence does he give?

Besides personal responsibility Khullar argues that other factors affect what people eat. He bases his conclusion on the fact that factors such as advertising wrong foods/products influence individuals who can gain from them. He states that there are products important in reducing obesity rates that are not affordable and available to individuals living in the low income parts. He argues that most Americans consume foods high in fat, calorie and little nutrients. Resources that promote obesity are more than those that reduce obesity rates.

"Stuffed and Starved"

What are economies of scale, and how does that help you understand the food distribution system? According to Patel, what role does government play in the current food system?

Economies of scale can be defined as the cost advantage that businesses encounter when output amount increases. Understanding the concept of economies of scale helps in understanding food affordability and how it is distributed to different groups/areas. The government plays the role of developing economic policies that influence food demand. It is its duty to give clear information related to nutrition and food.

Patel claims that corporate food giants don't have to play by the rules. What does he mean by "the rules" in this context? Who makes the rules?

The rules stated by Patel are the guidelines established in the world food system. The rules are meant to be followed by food manufacturers and producers. These rules are made by organizations such as the World Trade Organization.
