My family and I migrated from Ukraine, the second largest country in Europe. Ukraine borders countries like Hungary, Slovakia, and Russia. Our people pay a lot of attention to our customs and traditions, and my family and i are not an exception. For example, on the last week before lent, we celebrate Maslenitsa to bid farewell to winter. Each day of this week has a particular ritual. During the summer solstice, on the night of July 7 th , we jump over the bonfire. Other activities on this night include girls throwing wreaths in water and hunting for ferns in the forest. Other traditions in Ukraine include singing Christmas carols, plunging into an ice hole, greeting people with bread and salt, and painting and beating eggs at the onset of Easter celebrations.
Lots of stereotypes exists about Ukrainians and their culture. Some are good, others are not taken kindly by my people. For example, it is a worldwide belief that people from west Ukraine are hostile. This belief may be due to political reasons. However, those who have visited the region know how friendly the locals are. Another belief is that Ukrainians eat Borscht and Salo every day. It is impossible to eat the same meals everyday even if they are the staple food. Plus these foods are also very rich in fats hence not so advisable.

One of the major problems in Ukraine is unemployment. This came about when heavy industry decided to shift focus, leading to loss of jobs. Also, with the re-institution of land property rights, farmers are now going through a transitionary phase. Cultural diversity is very important to me for my future success. Given that I will be working in fields dominated by people from different cultures, it is important that I learn and accustom to the different cultures. This helps avoid conflict. With cultural diversity, there is lots of creativity and innovation. This eventually leads to growth and equality.
