In the modern business setting, labor unions play an essential role in addressing the needs of employees. Notably, they apply the aspect of collective bargaining to voice their concerns. Stevis and Felli (2015) argued that labor unions are historically designed to address both the social and economic needs of employees. Although labor unions have encountered several challenges, they have tremendously addressed the needs of the employees.
Unionization has been used as a way of airing the concerns of employees in the modern business setting. This process occurs when the employees of the company form a labor union that acts as an intermediary between the workers and the top management through voting (“Working with labor union”). In my opinion, I agree with this approach as it adopts a pragmatic approach in resolving the needs of the employees. In most cases, when the unionization occurs, the management tends to address the issue of employees promptly. Moreover, in firms where this strategy is applied, employees get affair remuneration, which increases their productivity, and more so, improved the overall performance of the organization. Evidently, unionization has successfully addressed the concern of the workers.

Labor unions are linked with several merits and demerits. To begin with, labor unions provide individual workers with the power of a group to voice their concerns. Secondly, they improved the affairs of workers by advocating for better pay and working environment ( Chief, 2019). Besides, they create a foundation for meaningful retirement and reduces the number of unreasonable dismissals of workers (C hief, 2019). On the other hand, trade unions have reinforced the social-economic divide in the society and limited the ability of an employer to dismiss underperforming workers. Therefore, trade unions have considerably improved the social and economic welfare of workers.
Labor unions have witnessed impediments in the current society. However, they have addressed both the social and economic challenges of employees. Therefore, organizations must ensure they treat their employees well to avoid the intervention of trade unions.
