Use of Laptops in Class

Laptops are today increasingly being used in the higher education and the k-12 classrooms. The use of tablets or laptops will allow early opportunities for embracing technology development and diffusion among the younger generation to better their future life. Despite laptops presenting the opportunities of distractions, using the laptops or similar devices such as tablets will yield significant benefits. Thus, the benefits of using laptops in school at all levels of education will pose more benefits than limitations.

The proponents of laptops argue that they are supported by most of the students and teachers in classrooms since this device are lighter compared to textbooks. Besides, tablets or laptops can hold a lot of textbooks at the same time, thus leading to cost reduction, especially in relation to the cost of printing since the textbooks are in digital form ( Franklin et al., 2013).

The tablets and laptops give the students near ability to manage and organize their works as well as the study information. For instance, if the teacher sends assignment digitally, then student easily access and review the work all in one place. Similarly, digital works help both the teachers and students to edit or change work since assignment that is typewritten is easier to read compared to hand written (McCoy, 2013).

Equally important, students should be allowed to use laptops since it helps to keep the environment clean. This due the fact that there will be no paperwork and a lot of trees that are used to produce papers for books will be conserved, thus, protecting the environment. Besides, the use of tablets or laptops in class will keep the class environment clean since there is no waste of papers in class compared to use of books and papers that sometimes can easily misuse by the students ( Franklin et al., 2013).

Another good reason of encouraging use of laptops in the classroom is that they will open a new chapter of life for the students by enhancing the student skills. The students are embracing technology from a younger age, and thus, they are in a better position to discover more innovation as they interact with laptops in class. Besides, the use of tablet devices in classes makes life more interactive and connected.

However, the opponents of laptops and tablets argue that these devices are expensive to buy compared to the use of books. The implementation of tablets will require purchase of both hardware and software in schools. Similarly, the installation and maintaining of information technology facilities in schools such as wifi is costly. Equally important, laptops are costly to repair and time-consuming compared to use of books. Similarly, McCoy (2013) argues that using laptops in class and other mobile devices expose the students into health problems. For instance, handheld technological devices such as laptops and tablets are associated with many health challenges, including the syndrome that causes headaches, dry eyes, and blurred vision. Moreover, laptops have many distractions for classroom use. For instance, students will be tempted to play games or watch movies in class when they are supposed to learn, which reduces the concentration of classwork actives thus leading to poor performance of students in class.

In conclusion, the use of laptops in class will improve the quality of education since most of the class work is effectively performed by the student. However, tablets and laptops should be limited to only applications that are used for studying in class to reduce the distraction of students in their concentration.
