Subject: Mathematics Standard of Learning (SOL): Grade 2 – 3 Mathematical concept: Counting and adding numbers Book title: Charlotte's Web Author: White, E.B.  Picture of the front cover of the book:

A collection of games and activities will be designed to be done by the mathematics students while reading Charlotte's Web. Learners are expected to use these activities and games derived from this book to gain proficiency in counting, adding, subtracting and doing measurements in mathematics. While reading Charlotte's Web, students will be asked to be keen and identify textual questions in the book, which are relevant to mathematical number exploration. Examples of the questions to look out for in this book include: How far is that?  How long would that take?  What is the chance of that? These are questions related to the exploration of numbers in mathematics. They appeal to counting, measuring and subtracting. By concentrating on reading and thinking through these textual questions in the book, the learners will be able to start developing their comprehension of the mathematical concept of counting and measuring. It is important to note that in mathematics, one must measure and count the figures in order to add and subtract numbers. Charlotte's Web is a book that is full of beautiful ideas regarding the importance of life and friendship. However, it can be applied to teaching mathematical concept of counting and measuring because it contains questions related to mathematics subject. For instance, there are words like ‘although I did question the height and angle of the loft swing...’. There are statements also that lead to creation of mathematical games and activities, which are applicable in teaching the concept counting and measuring. The games and activities in this unit can be done during the rainy days while inside the house at home, when gathered around the kitchen table or even in the course of the sunny days while lying on the picnic rug. The learner should enjoy reading the book aloud and engage in a number of mathematical ideas built from this children’s literature book. The activities in this unit are open-ended and practical. They are activities that provide the children with the chance to explore the mathematical concept of counting and measuring. These are activities, which enhance mathematical questioning, problem-solving, application of technical language and spatial awareness as one reads the literature book. Through these activities, children will be able to develop new understanding of the way the world operates. Some of the activities involve the exploration of negative numbers, scale and ratio. The main learning activities include the following: “What do you mean, less than nothing?" This activity will be used to explore number lines. “Is 7 lucky?” This activity will be employed in exploring number plays and patterns. “How many geese?” This activity will be used to explore mathematical division and multiplication. “More than 100 people.” This activity will be employed in learning mathematical word problems.  “A giant pig.” This activity will be applied in learning mathematical measurement and scale as application of division and multiplication. All the above activities are derived from the literature book Charlotte's Web. Students should use these particular activities to develop their mathematical thoughts on the concept of number exploration and measuring. Moreover, it is expected by using this children’s literature book, the learning process for the mathematics subject will be made quite enjoyable and interesting for the learners. It is vital to note that many students tend to find mathematics to be tough and boring. However, this learning method will solve such problem for the learners.
