Human beings use art to communicate to each other and pass different messages to the audience. Over the years, different artists have created various forms of art with diverse messages. In this course, I was able to view and analyze several artworks form diverse eras. The artwork that I found to be the most interesting and engaging was Venus and Mars painting by Sandro Botticelli. The painting is believed to have been created around 1483 by the Italian renaissance painter ("Venus and Mars and playful satyrs," n.d.). In this panel painting, the artists shows the image of the Roman gods Venus and Mars. The youthful couple are shown relaxing in a forest setting. In addition, they are surrounded by playful satyrs. A careful examination of the artwork suggest that it was probably created to commemorate a wedding. It is set into a unique paneling that befits a groom and bride. This is suggested by the painting’s wide forward and the close view of the main figures in it. In some instances, the painting has been regarded to be a clear representation of ideal creation of sensuous love. It appears that the artists developed the concept of the painting by borrowing ideas from different people like Poliziano.

While analyzing this particular painting, I realized that the artists probably wanted to incorporate bedroom furniture. Mars appears vulnerable while Venus is looking calmly and fully clothed. In addition, Mars is wearing a significantly small piece of fabric that leaves most of his body on the view of Venus. In this regard, Mars is portrayed as the object of desire in the painting. I also noted that even though Venus seem to be fully clothed, her powerful sexuality portrayal is still evident. The artist used the sculptural surfaces and sensuous curves to highlight the sexuality of venous. The approach enabled Botticelli to highlight the powers of the Venus. Furthermore, the portrayal allowed the artists to eroticize Venus, demonstrate her divine beauty, and draw the attention of the viewer to her feminine side beyond the dress.

We usually encounter different forms of arts from time to time. In some cases, the messages that the artists wanted to pass across can be seen clearly. In other instances, it is not easy to determine the actual meaning of the text. In both cases, however, the audience must strive to focus on the actual message that the artist is trying to communicate. It is only possible to enjoy the beauty of the artwork if the message that is underneath the images can be understood. The artwork that I selected for this task provides an excellent example of how artists can use different elements of art to communicate with the audience. In addition, the artwork gave me a chance to look beyond the literal meaning of the piece to understand the underlying message. I believe that the skills that I learned while analyzing this particular painting will help me in the future when engaging other forms of art or communicating with people. During our daily interactions, we can either pass a message to other parties through spoken words or using gestures. In most instances, people tend to focus on the words that a person is speaking. In such instances, the audience may not realize the hidden meaning in the statements that the speaker is making. Just like I did with the selected piece of art, I will always try to look beyond the obvious statements that people make. Furthermore, I will focus on the speech and communication elements that the speaker is using to be able to know their intentions and message being passed across.
