This production made at Donwar received four Olivier Award nominations before transferring quickly to Broadway. In this work, Mendes updated the book slightly and Bart included new musical material. Apart from Lionel Bart’s Oliver production, Mendes was a lead director in the production of David Hares , The Blue Room productions in 1998, Three Days of Rain in 1999, and Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya and Twelfth Night in 2002. The second film that he produced was Road to Perdition that generated a revenue about 181 million dollars.

In December 2002, he stepped down as Donwar Warehouse director and Michael Grandage succeeded him. After departing from Donwar, Mendes decided to revive Gypsy in 2003 ( Egeberg, 2020 ). He built Neal Street Productions in 2003, a theatre, television and film production company, a company he wanted to use in production of his future work. Additionally, he directed The Lehman Trilogy for the National Theatre in 2018 and later moved to London to direct another season.

Mendes has achieved a lot in his career as a director. With the drama American Beauty film as a director, he got both the Golden Globe Award and Academy Award. The war film 1917 that was produced in 2019 earned him the second Golden Globe Award for best director and BAFTA Award for Best Direction. This film also made him to win the nomination of the second Academy Award as the best director and the film was nominated for its best original screen play and pictures. According to the Daily Telegraph, Mendes is number 15 on the list of 100 most powerful people in England.

The most successful and watched movies that Sam Mendes directed are American Beauty and Jarhead that was produced in 2005. American Beauty is an American black comedy-drama that was produced in 1999. Alan Ball wrote the film and Mendes directed it. The film is about imprisonment and imprisonment escape. It also presents the breakdown of a suburban family man whose life depends on self-loathing, freedom emptiness, and liberation at the ultimate cost of his life. The movie was successful because it had the message that people liked at the moment. The film was developed in the most unique and soulless way, manicured and made to bland tastefulness. The film broadly acclaimed many audiences and critics in the world. Reviewers applauded its production aspects, with specific emphasis on Spacey, Ball, and Mendes. In this film, Spacey was nominated as the Best actor while Mendes was nominated as the Best Director. American Beauty won the best original screenplay, cinematography and pictures.

Additionally, the film also won the BAFTA Awards, Academy Award, and Golden Globe Award for Best Pictures. With the American Beauty, Mendes won Best Director, Golden Globe Award, and Directors Guild of America Award in the Academy Award. The actors and actresses in this film include Kevin Spacey who featured as Lester Burnham, Thora Birch (Jane Burnham), Wes Bentley (Ricky Fitts), Mena Suvari (Angela Hayes), and Peter Gallagher (Buddy Kane). The other actors and actresses in American Beauty include Allison Janney (Barbara Fitts), Chris Cooper (Colonel Fitts), Scott Bakula (Jim Olmeyer), Sam Robards (Jim Berkley), and Barry Del Sherman (Brad). The movie was filmed at Hancock Park, Warner Bros in Burbank, Califonia, and Brentwood in Los Angeles. The adjacent houses on the Warner Ranch were rebuilt to match the script’s need. The next door at Colonel Fitts is in midtown’s Hancock Park district between West 3rd and West 4th Streets. The school where Lester admires is a blending of the two buildings to the south of the city. This movie reflects anger and sadness as much as the actor pretends to have a happy American family.

Jarhead is another successful film produced by Mendes. It was a war drama film that was based on the memory of Marine Anthony Swofford. Sam Mendes directed this movie and involved Jake Gyllenhaal (Swofford) as the lead actor. The other actors and actresses in this film include Brian Geraghty (Fergus O’Donnell), Dennis Haysbert (Major Lincoln), Peter Sarsgaard (Alan Troy), Jacob Vargas (Juan Cortez), Jamie Foxx (Sgt Sykes), and Chris Cooper (Lt Kazinski). Universal Pictures released Jarhead in 2005. When the film was released it received mixed reviews and it was a disappointment to the box office because it only generated 97 million dollars against a budget of 72 million dollars. As much as the film received a mixed response, it was an introduction of a film series of four films. Amid various criticisms, Jarhead received several awards such as Black Movie Award, Gold Derby Awards, Arts Director Guild, Hollywood Film Awards, and Golden Schmoes Awards. It was produced in the Imperial Valley in Southern California because the conditions resemble those of Iraq. Brawley was a local town that was used by marines for training purposes. Jarhead is sad but depicts a more realistic view of how soldiers felt in the Middle East war.

In both American Beauty and Jarhead, Mendes employs various techniques such as camera angles, color, set design, and soundtrack. Most films utilize structured camera angles and set design to deliver meaning to the audience. Throughout these films, the use of stage design and camera angles has been structured to resemble the themes of the movies. Another technique utilized in these movies is color. Colour is an important technique that film directors use to communicate ideas and themes to the audience. In conclusion, Sir Samuel Alexander Mendes is a theatre and film director that put more emphasis on his work. He treated classic stage productions with innovativeness which enabled him to produce thought-provoking films.
