The Western Seaboard is among the most populated areas in America. It is however dominated by two major fault lines namely the Hayward Fault and the Sand Andreas Fault. The Hayward Fault is approximately 74 miles long and runs across densely populated areas in the San Francisco Bay area. The San Andreas Fault runs parallel to the Hayward fault and is much longer at 800 miles. At around the San Francisco Bay area, the two faults runs parallel to each other creating the apprehension that if tremor would cause them to Rapture at the same time, the results would be catastrophic and lead to the deaths of millions of people and loss of billions of dollars. It is for this reason that the Eastern Seaboard had been highly defended. Indeed, the Pacific Fleet of the US Navy is arguably Americans largest military juggernaut.

Russia in the Future

Russia is a large country with many mineral resources including oil and natural gas, which gives it the potential to be a great economic power. However, this greatness has been compromised due to the over-focus on military expenditure as well as corruption. Russia seems to have moved away from the two aforesaid vices. The nation is gradually adopting democracy, which gives more power to the people thus eliminating large-scale corruption by a powerful elite. Furthermore, the nation’s investment focus on the end of the Cold War has moved away from the military. The nation is now investing in technology and indulging in international trade. If the current trend holds, Russia will be one of the most powerful nations in the world economically.

The US Military without Dependence on Oil

The world is generally at peace except in what is now regarded as the Muslim world to wit the Middle East and the Arab World. Unfortunately, this is also the areas rich in oil which is an important commodity to the US economy. If the American economy was not dependent on oil, America would not have an extremely vested interest in the Muslim World. It would, therefore, avoid acrimony with most of the nations who pursue terror such as Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan. This would exponentially reduce the obligations of the US military thus reducing its budget, need for manpower as well as operations. Therefore, the use of the US military power would have been mainly to protect the homeland and conducting civilian activities since America would generally be at peace.

Tactical and Strategic Objectives of Terrorists

As opposed to conventional warfare, terrorism mainly targets civilian populations with an intention to cause maximum damage and cause most fear. The main tactical objective of terrorism is, therefore, to attack in places where people would generally consider themselves secure. They also attack in a manner likely to create the impression that the terrorists are invincible and omnipotent and therefore can attack again with abandon. In this manner, terrorists have been extremely successful with the fear of terror attack changing any aspects of the world more so with regard to air travel. The strategic objectives of terrorists are to break the will of superior military powers and cause them to capitulate without having to overcome their military might. In this aspects, global terror has generally failed.

Missile Defense

With the advent of global nuclear powers, the world lives in fear of annihilation through a nuclear war in what has been dubbed as mutually assured destruction. Missiles are the general mode of transmitting explosive warheads, nuclear or otherwise from one point to another. Intercontinental missiles have the ability to move bombs to any point of the world thus posing a major threat. Missile defense refers to a system designed to detect and intercept missiles before they become a threat to the nation. The current missile defense systems have been criticized as being ineffective with many commentators arguing that dismantling of nuclear systems globally is the only way to be safe from a nuclear holocaust.
