If I was to find myself in a similar situation in future, I would take note of the behaviors and skills valued by the company. One of the desired virtue at Netflix is the ability to continuously practice judgement on oneself and one’s activities (McCord, 2018). An individual is expected to identify the root causes of issues and address them. This is possible through the practice of Hansei. Hansei allows employees to critically and honestly examine themselves, understand their shortcomings and address them (Ballard &Tommelein, 2012). In such a situation in Netflix, the employee had outlived her usefulness. She had worked excellently for the company for ten years but was performing dismally in the new department. Hansei would come in handy in this situation. Netflix expects employees to be independent and to take responsibility for actions Hastings, 2009). Hence, the best way to achieve this is to recognize problems in personal performance, analyze the difference from the actual and the expected then take personal responsibility. I would then, using Hansei, then take personal responsibility for the poor performance and make practical steps to change.

Addressing change in this organization would require the use of three values; communication, honesty and courage. During Hansei, the final step is commitment to improve. This usually involves setting bigger goals then breaking them down to smaller achievable goals. Once this decision is made, I would then communicate with my senior of the plan in a clear and concise manner. This way, my expectations for performance are made clear to my supervisors. At this stage, an honest conversation with supervisors may advice on the need for change in role, jobs or plan of action. In the spirit of growth and usefulness, it is important to be open to any advice from supervisors. If the supervisor agrees to the improvement plan, then I would go ahead and implement it. This way, I can better establish my contribution to the company.
