Substance abuse leads to disorders such as addiction, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms (Comer & Comer, 2018). In New Jersey, the most significant substance abuse disorders are opioids. New Jersey loses 3000 residents to drug-related causes, with the number decreasing in recent years, but the advent of the Coronavirus has caused the number of cases to increase (Stainton, 2020). New Jersey faces a very big opioids crisis that has grown over the years.
Common withdrawal symptoms include rapid breathing, restlessness, anxiety, excessive sweating, and rapid breathing (Comer & Comer, 2018). The most easily witnessed are constant anxiety, restlessness, and irregular breathing patterns that often scare passers-by. Most homeless drug addicts appear very thin and frail due to years of drug abuse. Frail health and excessive anxiety disorders are often seen in drug addicts who are admitted in hospitals and rehabilitation centers.

The effects of opioids abuse are detrimental to everyone in society. Deaths of relatives occurring due to opioid abuse affect the emotional and mental health of family members and are one of the adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) that affect a child’s long-term health and wellbeing ( State of New Jersey, 2020 ). A large proportion of students fall prey to addiction leading to school dropouts, increased crimes, and social ills such as prostitution to get funds to buy the drugs. Many government resources are used on projects to treat addicts such as the 2018 budget of 100 million dollars and various programs such as the 5 minutes to Help, the Peer Navigator program for inmates, availing the overdose reversal drug Naloxone (Narcan) to all addicts among others ( State of New Jersey, 2020 ). Therefore, opioid abuse leads to many social ills, and considerable effort is required to combat it.
