According to Joy Meads, human objectivity is determined by several factors. The way humans judge things is as a result of several factors. Unconscious bias is the major factor in influencing how human beings perceive things. Our opinions are usually biased based on what we go through daily.
Our daily activities are governed by a series of assumptions most of which are biased. Our objectivity in perceiving things is most times determined by our unconscious bias. After going through one of the implicit association tests, I was surprised by how human beings tend to interpret different situations. I learnt that human’s judge based on the physical attributes, without truly understanding the background. For instance, humans tend to form biases based on physical attributes such as clothing, skin color, walking style, and even presentation. Most people do not take their time to understand a person, instead, they judge based on their physical attributes.

Gender is a major attribute of forming bias today. According to Joy Meads, most people will take men as more suited for some jobs as compared to women. Men tend to be more highly associated with professions and careers, with women being associated with household chores. Other times, culture forms a major point of bias, with men being considered to be better leaders than women.
The results of the IAT reflect the true state of our society and those engrained bias and stereotypes that continue to define our choices. It is a perfect reflection of human reasoning, coupled with their perception on different things. Some parts of the IAT were easier as compared to others, especially capturing the influence it has on the audience.
In class situation, a perfect example is that of a class play session. Assuming that the play is about a court sitting and proceeding. I tend to think that the audience would be more appreciative of a male judge character than they would for a female judge actor. This is because we have been sensitized our thinking into believing that certain roles are better suited for males than for females.
Mead’s strategies of overcoming unconscious bias will help me in this case especially Mead’s strategy number 7 of testing various stereotypes that may hinder my perspective. Recognition of a certain bias, will help me in being conscious of how I perceive certain situations, like that of having a female judge rather than a male judge.
In conclusion, I agree with Joy Mead’s approach that unconscious biasness plays a crucial part in my decisions and how I perceive certain situations. In this case, it will help me change my perspective on having a female judge other than a male judge.
