I have always believed that art is the most powerful tool of expression. Since I was young, I have always used art to let people know what I feel about different subjects. Perhaps it is important to explain how my passion for art started. First, my parents tell me that when I was below ten years, I used to enjoy playing with precious things such as marbles, glass, and porcelain. While most parents would buy plastic materials for their children to play with, my parents would select colorful and precious things for me to play with. My obsession with such materials made them to buy me colored pencils and papers where I would scribble and color things. When I was above ten, I tried drawing the cartoons I watched on television. I did not know the level of my skill till I started going to school. Children would marvel at my drawings and it is from that point that I began to give a serious thought on art.
Although people always have the perception that art ought to impress or be used for decorative purposes, I have a different perception. Just the same way a journalist writes with the purpose of informing the public, art should also be used to inform the public. The sketchpad, drawing board or the canvas are akin to a journalist’s writing pad. Therefore, my role as an artist is to help the community advocate for their rights and condemn evil in the society. As such I have participated in various exhibitions in Chicago, both in the streets and galleries. Through the exhibitions, I have interacted with many prominent artists who have helped shape me as an artist. Specifically, the interactions have made me to understand the importance of having a unique style as an artist; that art is not just about drawing or painting images rather; a good artist ought to come up with a theme which represents something that he or she stands for.

From experience, I have realized that good art is derived from interactions with the society. Myself, most of the weekends I spend time with children in foster homes. A lot of people may not know that children in these homes go through a lot of emotional disturbance. Some of them do not have parents while others ran away from abusive parents and guardians. These children need people they can talk to and most importantly, a way through which they can express themselves. I try to promote the use of art as a medium through which the children can convey their thoughts and feelings. Secondly, I interact with people on the streets in an attempt to find out their thoughts on contemporary issues. It is from such interactions that I come up with artwork which portrays the thoughts of the public.
Even though I have participated in numerous art exhibitions and community projects, I feel that I need to advance my skill. It is the reason why I would like to enroll in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) for the undergraduate program. SAIC is a renowned institution for producing artists who are creating artworks with a purpose. I am also optimistic that I will meet students who are equally good and with whom we shall contribute positively to the objectives of SAIC. Although I look forward to meeting great and accomplished tutors at SAIC, I also realize that I have a critical role of making SAIC an excellent institution. I am resilient and passionate about what I do. As such, I have a strong conviction that SAIC will change my life and sharpen my artistic skills.
