My desire to join a medical school was driven by several factors that jointly enhance my interest in the field. My childhood dream was to help alleviate the suffering that people from my community went through. I was determined to address some of the issues that affected their ability to live a fulfilling life. Later in life, I realized that attending a medical school will open diverse career opportunities for my future job in the field of medicine. It will give me a chance to be part of the medical department or work in the hospital or science institute. Attending medical school creates an opportunity to select biomedicine, pharmacy, nursing, physiotherapy and dentistry including other professional fields.
Similarly, attending a medical school gives me an opportunity to work in a recognized and respected field. One of the primary reasons why I have decided to participate in medical school is to help people and to enhance their lives by addressing some of the health issues that they face. A professional with the medical background is highly sought after in the market making the field a preferred choice for people who desire a stable and highly respected job.

Different experiences drove my motivation to join a medical school throughout my life. I have on various occasions encountered events that enhanced my desire to enter a medical school. I desire to bring the latest scientific innovations by conducting comprehensive studies on isolated communities. My dream is to see enhanced preventive education in the marginalized communities and to inspire other physicians to advocate for accessible healthcare which is right to all individuals.
From my childhood, I encountered challenging situations that cemented my desire to attend a medical school. I was raised in Colombia where I had firsthand experience of what poor access to healthcare is and the effect of being marginalized. It is from this stage that I developed an interest to pursue medicine when I grow up to alleviate the suffering that the community was undergoing. I remember of an incident in my childhood when my grandmother was diagnosed with diabetes a condition that adversely affected her health. She lacked medical insurance and therefore could not afford appropriate healthcare just like the majority of the community. My grandmother's health deteriorated, and I was in deep pain because I could not cure her condition and stop her suffering. At 14, I moved to America where I faced the challenges of cultural differences. I had to persevere to adapt to the new culture despite facing significant challenges that affected my academic performance.
I had difficulties communicating with my peers, and in some instances, I always asked teachers different questions and for clarification which bothered them as well as the other students. The circumstances and the reactions by the teachers did not break me. I had a supportive history teacher who continuously encouraged me to see the positive side of life. Despite the challenges that I encountered in the new environment, I decided to break the cultural barriers by interacting with students from all walks of life. I was amazed to realize that we all had similar goals and aspirations. English was a challenging language for me, and I decided to dedicate all my efforts to understand the word to be able to comprehend and analyze the different concepts in the field of study. I was determined to improve my English language to break the existing barriers and also as a way of proving to myself that ant barriers can be turned into opportunities.
Cultural change and a new environment affected my grades and even my efforts including attending tutorial classes to improve them did not yield excellent overnight results. In my tenth grade year, I worked hard including taking afternoon courses to enhance my understanding of the concepts taught in class. I was now familiar with the culture, and my academic performance was improving day by day. I was no longer the same students who did understand English. When I completed my eleventh grade, I was honored as the valedictorian of my graduating class. This honor enhanced my fundamental belief of self-discipline and perseverance.
During my eleventh grade, I discovered the challenges faced by my new hometown regarding access to specialized healthcare. I later volunteered at Baptist Hospital in Miami where I realized that preventive diseases like diabetes, heart problems, and obesity were more common than other ailments. The hospital also had other challenges including space and few professionals who understand Spanish. In my volunteering at the annual community fair I realized that there was a need for equal access to health care in the community. The challenges faced by the local community including the vulnerable member further motivated my desire to join a medical school so that I can change the health care system to promote access to equal healthcare. I was determined more than ever contribute to my community which stimulated my desire for academic success. It is for these reasons that I want to join a medical school so that I can address some of the health-related problems faced by minority and marginalize groups throughout the country.
