Students at Royal Roads University use the style rules of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (American Psychological Association [APA], 2010), hereafter referred to as the APA Style manual, when formatting academic essays. The APA Style manual addresses many different topics that can be of interest to an academic author; in this essay, I will provide an overview of some of the major rules on formatting documents, in-text citations, and references.
Formatting Documents
The formatting of academic essays addresses topics such as margins, running heads, alignment, and section headings. Using consistent formatting within an essay helps the reader to understand the structure of the document, as well as ensuring that the document meets the required standards. While the rules are detailed, they are not complex; for example, authors should double-space, “between all text lines of the manuscript. Double-space after every line in the title, headings, footnotes, quotations, references, and figure captions” (APA,2010).
