Introduction 

Stress refers to a state of emotional, physical, or mental tension resulting from different factors within an individual’s internal and external environment. Considering that stress is inevitable in the human life, students also experience stressful moments thereby influencing their physical and mental health. Student stress is associated with a number of factors that include the external and internal factors that create tension and anxiety within a student. Based on nature of factors causing stress, students tend to experience varying effects. In that case, it is necessary to capitalize on identifying the causes of stress in a bid to develop management techniques that would assist the students to overcome the stress. The effects of stress among the students include poor performance in the academics, health issue such as poor appetite, change of sleep patterns and emotional effects such as change in socialization.

Internal and External Causes of Student Stress 

Internal Factors 

Internal factors involve stressors that are associated with an individual based on their goals and objectives and their strategies towards achieving the set goals. When focusing on student stress, the internal stressors play a significant role in the development of stress considering that the that the personalities, character, and attitudes are crucial among the students. In this case, the internal factors causing student stress include inability to achieve academic goals and objectives, their expectations towards the teachers and parents, the desire to perform better, and attitudes towards different aspects concerning education. In cases when the internal factors go beyond control, the students tend to experience different types of stresses, which may include episodic stress, acute stress, or chronic stress. The different types of stress caused by the external factors result in emotional and mental effects thereby affecting the performance and interaction of the student with the teachers and other students.

External Causes 

The external factors that causes stress involves physical aspects associated with the day-to-day learning activities of the students. The external factors contribute to different types of stress, which may include positive stress and other negative stress such as acute and chronic stress among the student. The triggers of external stressors include upcoming tests, a heavy workload, difficult assignments, and too little time to study for an examination. The mentioned triggers may result in the development of positive stress there leading to a situation where a student engage in putting more efforts to ensure that they perform well in their upcoming exams. On the other hand, the triggers may result in negative stress such as the acute stress where a student tend to experience pressure, which result in effects such as withdrawal, insomnia, loss of appetite among other physical and emotional effects.

Another external factor to note revolves around the pressure that students experience from their parents and guardians building on the need for them to perform. Often, parents place a lot of emphasis on the performance outcomes of their students while in different levels of education. The impact that this tends to have on the students is that it contributes to a high possibility of stress, as it becomes essential for them to engage in all actions necessary for them to achieve the set goals. In cases where the students do not achieve the set objectives, the possibility of stress increases significantly. Parents ought to understand the impacts that they have on their students serving as a key determinant of the stress that they experience as part of their approaches towards effective learning.

Conclusion 

Stress is inevitable in all individuals considering that the stressor includes aspects in our day to day activities. Stress is a common aspect among the students considering that engaging in the learning process results to factors that trigger stress. Student stress is attributed to internal and external factors within the student’s environment. Internal factors involve stressors that are associated with an individual based on their goals and objectives and their strategies towards achieving the set goals. The external factors that causes stress involves physical aspects associated with the day-to-day learning activities of the students. The identification of the triggers in both the external and internal factors is crucial in order to identify strategies that would be effective in the management of any given type of stress basing on the cause.
