I write this letter to you while sited on my bed inside my jail cell walls. Being in confinement feels idle and lonely, so I felt that I should cheer up my mood by keeping my self-busy with it. Therefore this means that my letter is long because I had all the time to write it. I have been made aware of your recent utterances terming our movement's recent actions as unreasonable and untimely, so the main motive of writing this letter is to answer the questions of every religious leader and all my other critics’ as well.
I now see that you have allowed yourselves to get influenced by this outsider reasoning. Therefore, I feel the need to clean up all the rumors and speculations and explain why that led to my confinement in Birmingham City Jail. As you all know, I am the president of a Christian movement that has widely continued to branch and expand its operations in every state on the south.
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
A couple of a few months ago, we were invited to Birmingham city by our local affiliate there with a mission to participate in a peaceful protest if the situation demanded such an action. My team and I felt the urge to take this action, and we responded to the calling. Therefore, I am in Birmingham city because I am responding to an invite handed to me by our local affiliate.
The other reason for my being in Birmingham city is to speak against the injustice in this city. Just like Jesus Christ traveled to different cities and continents worldwide, I similarly feel compelled to preach the gospel of freedom from oppression to everyone in a different town from mine. Injustice, no matter where it occurs, is a threat to the country's justice and, therefore, must be dealt with by all means. Most of you feel the need to condemn the demonstrations in Birmingham city but do not condemn the reason behind these demonstrations. I would have opted to use another method to pass my message, but the black community in this city have no other way but this one.
