The works of Debussy, Stravinsky, and Schönberg

Born in the Romantic tradition, they are the music legends of the 20th century-all because they revolutionized it within their careers. Nearly every connoisseur of classical music feels the need to include one of these great composers in their top pantheon, but no one can ever decide about which one it should be. The three of these composers have had a profound, enduring effect on music history as a whole, and their presence can still be felt in somewhat different, sometimes contrasting ways.

Known for his piano works, orchestral songs, and an opera, Claude Debussy is the pioneer of the French Impressionist movement. Arnold Schoenberg is among Western art music's most significant figures. He promoted atonality, serialism, expressionism, and Sprechstimme, revolutionary concepts. Igor Stravinsky, a composer, conductor, and pianist born in Russia, has acknowledged him as the most influential composer of 20th-century art. He is best known for ballets, concertos on piano, symphonic music, and operas.
