Contemporary popular music has special features, unlike the music of Adorno's time. Therefore, high competence and reading practice is required to interpret them. Today's music has new influences and progressive ideas that require special attention for the audience to understand what the singer is communicating. Contemporary music composers use western culture, philosophical and spiritual ideas to write their work. Globalization is highly embraced in the music industry to inspire people to adopt western culture and lifestyle. Therefore, high competence is required to interpret today's music because they widely resemble western cultures and practices, which many people from other cultures may not be conversant with (Askin & Mauskapf, 2017). For example, western cultures have distinct lifestyles that are highly adapted to create uniformity in all their practices. Therefore, this makes it important to understand western cultures and practices to interpret modern music.

Contemporary music uses a new tonal or atonal system, which requires in-depth knowledge to understand. Historically, music notation has significantly changed due to the change in western music theory. The Twelve-Tone Series' development and adoption, which is primarily grounded on the knowledge that a methodical system for atonal music should grant each tone the same disposition, requires high competence and knowledge to understand (Askin & Mauskapf, 2017). For instance, the Twelve-Tone Series prime is manipulated through several methods, such as memory loss's main focus.

Besides, contemporary music uses different forms and structures, disparate from the masterpiece and concerto forms used in the past. The aleatoric music provides greater flexibility in music work outcomes. This feature makes modern music require special interpretation skills because the composer may choose to give the performer various interpretation options that cannot be captured by outsiders of the music industry (Howard, 2018). For example, western cultures applied in contemporary music change the form and structure, making it challenging for the audience to capture the content unless they are competent.
