Thesis- Social media helps enhance communication, social connection and technical skills; however, it also causes negative impacts like sleep deprivation, cyberbullying, sexual experimentation and privacy issues.

Body:

1 st Argument

Social media promotes social connection and enhances communication

Research by Undiyaundeye (2014) concluded that s ocial media platforms help people to have better connections with friends and families breaking the geographical barriers that may limit communication

The above supporting point sourced from Undiyaundeye study is significant because it explains how social media has broken the geographical barriers to enhance communications. It proves the main point of this paragraph by exhibiting how people can easily interact and connect easily with social media platforms without distance limits.

2 nd Argument

Social media also has the benefits of promoting the development of various technical skills.

Findings by Undiyaundeye (2014) proves that the use of social media, teens can develop various skills, including reading, mathematical, problem-solving and critical thinking skills

The above facts prove that social media platforms can help people learn several skills, thus supporting the main point by illustrating some of the technical skills promoted by social media.

3 rd Argument

Despite the multiple benefits of social media, lack of self-regulation during usage might result in addiction, and sleep deprivation.

A study by Ante-Contreras (2016) concluded that parents’ addiction to social media creates less face-to-face interaction with their children affecting the parent-child relationship.

Ante-Contreras's above supporting fact is significant because it exhibits the negative impacts of social media addiction on both parents and children. It supports the main point by showing that social media poses adverse effects of addiction to users.

4 th Argument

Social media is also linked to various destructive behaviours, such as cyberbullying and sexual experimentation.

Findings by Christofferson (2016) proved that online bullying has similar grave outcomes as face-to-face bullying.

The above findings by Christofferson are significant to this research because they help show how social media can pose threats to the welfare of the users. The findings support the main point by outlining the extent of some of the destructive behaviours that people may engage in through social media platforms.

5 th Argument

Privacy is another huge issue that affects many social media users.

A report by Undiyaundeye (2014) states that while the major social media providers have strived to protect people against cybersecurity issues, there are still multiple cases, particularly loss of financial information, identity theft, and leaking of confidential information.

The above findings support the main point by proving that unauthorised individuals can access confidential details through social media.

Conclusion

As much social media platforms have numerous positive impacts, they also have negative impacts if used without regulations. Therefore, regulation is paramount while using social media tools.
