A transition is as hard as a change. One of the most challenging transition is moving from high school where everything is done under supervision to college where self-discipline and a sense of responsibility determine one’s success. Everyone is excited to have passed the high school examinations because joining a college is always a pleasure to the parents and students. But without good communication, focus and good health, the college life may end up being a frustration to both the student and parents.

One tip for succeeding in college is communication. Building connections with the right people is of great importance. Most college students have a misconception that they are adults; thus, they know everything and do not need any direction from lecturers. Colleges are endowed with resources that are useful to learners. The resources include guidance and counselling, academic advice teams and other groups such as fellowships and games. In high school probably there was a time set for guidance and counselling, games and so on. In college, it is upon the student to choose what to do and when to do it.

I encourage you to look for an advisor, someone who will guide you academically and life in general. Do not choose any person. The person could be an administrator, one of your lecturers or college staff members. Remember, there are so many ‘teachers’ out there who will mislead you to join their bad-habit groups. Choose who to listen to. Your lecturers are your best teachers; your peers are not. This is not to say that you should not have friends. The point is, take advice from people you can trust. Building connections with the right people will make your campus life successful and also probably after college. Professors have office hours for meeting students. Take that advantage it will help you learn new ideas, know research projects; professors know most career paths and opportunities. Choose visiting lecturers over idling after classes.

Academics is your priority in college. Joining a college is inciting. You will be moving away from parents, living in new places and there is the freedom to attend parties and so on. Some choose to start small businesses while in college to boost their financial stability. There are sports, churches and clubs in college. They are all important, join them. They will help in physical fitness, mental health and spiritual growth. But they should not be a hindrance to your academic success. Strive to attend all the classes. This can be hard but try as much as you can not miss classes. Some lecturers may make attending the classes optional. Do not use this to avoid classes. Reading a professor’s notes is not enough to guarantee your success. The contact hours are a determiner of how well you will do in your examinations.

While in class, ensure that you do not multitask. There is enough time to WhatsApp and Facebook. Avoid handing in your assignments late. College life prepares you for work. Your GPA matters, and so does your effectiveness and dependability. If you have to hand in an assignment late, let it be beyond your control. Avoid cheating at all cost. One of the surprises that befall first-year college students is submitting an assignment and a lecturer taking a punitive action because of plagiarism. College is not about getting good grades; it is all about gaining useful skills such as writing and engaging in academic discourses. Focus on your academics and devote a good time to studies. Most importantly, stay disciplined.

Lastly, mind your health. Your mind and soul are in your body. In college, no one will restrict your eating habits. All sorts of foods and drinks will be at your disposal. Make sure to maintain a healthy diet. Engage in physical activities to avoid health problems. Also, do not rely on processed foods only for your food. Take fruits and vegetables. According to Jahangard et al. (2019), students have bad eating habits due to the heavy intake of fast foods, and 72.1% of the students had abnormal body weight. Eating processed food always does not mean you are classy, no, it means you do not care about your health, and this ignorance is costly. Excessive drinking is one of the risky habits’ college students engage in. Be careful not to drop out of school due to addiction or health problems caused by drug abuse. Water is cheaper and healthier than expensive drugs. Take care of your body; no one wants to die before they enjoy the fruits of their education.

Conclusively, to be successful in college, communicate with the right people, everyone will want to advise you. Choose who to listen to. Secondly, academics is your sole purpose in college. Take advantage of all the opportunities but do not forget your studies are more important. Lastly, stay healthy. Avoid risky behaviors such as eating processed foods daily and drug abuse.
