Eating disorders such as anorexia are among the leading causes of death among the people with mental illness. For a long time, I have known anorexia as a disorder that causes an obsessed with weight loss to the point that a person eats extremely low amounts of food. The readings and Laura Hill’s talk make a clear evaluation of the factors that contribute to Anorexia and how to manage it (TEDx, 2012). It is more than a feeling of an emotional feeling that induces starvation to maintain a perceived ideal body weight. The different processes that occur in various regions of the brain and the noises that a person with the disorder hears after eating are interesting. The feelings that follow an intake make it difficult for the people with the disorder to eat. Additionally, they do not get the signal of hunger in the insula and their amygdala feels disturbed following any intake (TEDx, 2012). They end up not liking food as they fear that an intake leads to the noisy experiences that distract their activities.
Apart from the activities in the brain that influence the fear of food, I also got a better understanding of how to manage anorexia effectively. Previously, I always thought that counseling and encouraging an individual to eat more or frequently is enough to make them change. This was because of the thought that anorexia was an emotional, cultural, and environmental problem that leads to consumption of less food for fear of gaining weight. However, helping the people with the disorder requires a different approach which involves explaining to them that increased feeding will cause mental problems because of the brain activities (TEDx, 2012). Understanding the brain's interpretation of feeding in people with anorexia is important in its effective management. Lastly, the video is informative about the possibilities of other people failing to recover from the disorder following management.
