Employees may be required to be tested for various drugs while at the workplace. A good drug testing programs should be that which is acceptable to the employees. There are certain features which make a drug testing program appropriate or good and effective. These features will make employees accept the program and willingly participate in the process. The features include written substance abuse policy, employee awareness and education, employee assistance action plan and supervisor training. The written drug and substance abuse policy outlines the roles of both the employers and the employees, circumstances, and types of testing, violation consequences among other important aspects. All parameter and procedures to be undertaken during the program must be thoughtfully developed and articulated to employees along with operational guidelines. This way, employees get to accept the drug testing program. For the program to work well, employees must be well aware and educated on policy, roles, alcohol and drug information, rights, and the consequences regarding the program. On top of these, employees must also be aware of the resources which are available to them in case it is found through the testing that they need help.
The employee assistance plan of action is quite critical in a drug testing program. It is the responsibility of the employee to identify some of the available or applicable resources that would help employees in case they have been found to have drug issues. Supervisors need to be trained on the dangers and impact of drugs and alcohol at the workplace. They must also be informed on how to recognize and deal with possible cases of substance abuse. Other roles of the supervisors include referring troubled employees to available resources within the company or community and supporting employees who return from treatment. When all these features are met, a drug testing program can be considered appropriate and acceptable to employees.
