College is an essential part of career development, knowledge, and advancement in academics. Therefore being prepared for college is vital to starting and progress in the academy. College preparedness requires a set of skills, knowledge, and behaviors that will ensure a student’s success while undergoing studies at a higher institution of learning. Regarding my case, I was prepared for a college education because of several reasons, as discussed hereinafter.

College preparedness requires a specific set of college-ready knowledge. Throughout my high school education, I had studied hard to gain the basics of mathematics, language, science, and foreign language. At the back of my mind, I knew these are pre-requisite disciplines that a student must study for them to experience a smooth transition from high school education to a college education. Curriculums for college education provide a well-rounded education, which is desirable for the types of courses college students take in readiness for their anticipated future careers. Personally, I knew which career I wanted to pursue after completing my high school studies, and that was a sign that I was getting ready to transition to college. Since I studied all the subjects taught in high school to completion and excelled, I believe I was ready to join a college as these subjects form the basis of learning in college.

A college-ready student also requires a specific set of skills, which include; being able to write excellently structured essays, developing logical arguments, following through detailed mathematical formulas, and employing scientific methods in solving certain problems, among others. I had all these skills, but I knew I was supposed to improve on them. While finishing my high school education, I was congratulated by my tutors for doing well in my essays and following through some of the complex mathematical formulas. In my opinion, these were the preliminary stages of a high school student’s college preparedness, and therefore I saw myself ready to join college.

College students have the mindset of being ready for school challenges and find ways of overcoming them. The notion of being ready for challenges in life was an aspect taught in church, and other people, especially those older than me, had made me aware of it on several occasions. Through the various church teachings, counseling sessions, and family talks, I developed habits, which align well with students ready to join college to further their education. Over time, and even after finishing my high school education, I learnt habits of being self-motivated, putting in all effort, even if it's 100% and also acting like a mature person. Individuals attending college education are considered grown-ups, and therefore, acting like a mature person was one of the behaviors, which would make life much more comfortable in my college life. These aspects, I believe, made me a student who is ready to join college.

Despite being ready in many of the aspects discussed above, I was also not completely ready for the time and schedule of college classes, which were different from high school. The college demanded more time to study as well as other activities. I was used to studying in short lesson times, but I knew college lessons took extended hours. I believed time management was vital to anybody that wants to succeed in college, and there I knew will need to work on my perseverance skills so that I can attend all classes without any problems.

To sum up, a college education remains an essential part of a person’s life in terms of skill and knowledge development in academics as well as future career life. Therefore, college preparedness is critical to a smooth transition from high school to college and consequent excellence in college life. Studying hard in high school to understand well the basic knowledge of mathematics, language studies and science made me gain the requisite knowledge needed to start a college education. Being able to construct well structure-essays, making logical arguments and following through complex mathematical problems prepared me for the college-level education, which was a higher level than high school education in terms of complexity. The mindset of expecting challenges in life and finding mature ways of solving them also made me a college-ready student.
