Identifying with a certain group of people, popularly known as a community is a privilege, in that it gives an individual a sense of identity and belonging. But, on the other hand, it is an act that comes along with its fair share of responsibility. There is always the need to uphold the society’s norms and beliefs. This is what gives the community its distinct culture and sets it apart from other communities as far as tradition goes. Each member of the community, therefore, has this golden responsibility, whether they choose to belong to the community or not, to uphold, preserve and pass down the community’s way of life to the future generations. This is called the collective well-being responsibility which instills in the members’ the importance of family ties thereby making them aware of their responsibility to maintain the community’s lineage. Members also learn the value of sharing fairly the resources allocated to them for the benefit of the society.
The second obligation that members of a community owe to each other is interdependency. The society has clearly defined duties for the different classes of members. These duties are divided along gender lines and also age lines. Men have obligations that are identical to them, and this also applies to the women. Children also have their responsibilities laid out. These duties are supposed to be carried out in a manner that creates interdependence in the sense that for a certain group to effectively carry out its duties it will need the help of another group. This teaches every member of the community the spirit of teamwork and respect since they need each other regardless of the nature of their duties to succeed. This emphasizes the need to love each other, respect and be mindful of other citizens. Also, they must treat each other justly and equally.
