According to the novels’ storyline chronology, Hakim is a boy who lives in downtown LA and goes to the public school where he spends most of his time trying to make good grades for the SATs. Apparently, Hakim developed a liking to an Asian teenager May who’s family is reserved and have arranged her marriage as soon as she has finished her high school (Shakespeare 2008). As time went by hakim did not tell May his feelings but kept close to her every single day and made sure she helped him with his mathematics since he flanked in the subject. This paper will present Romeo and Juliet’s’ rationale in the story chronology and interlink it to the contemporary lifestyle .

Since May was good in math, she did not resist Hakim’s bid to tutor him. As time went by she developed a liking to him and would get together and chill out during the weekends. They pretty much were into each other but did not know how to express their feelings aside from trivial shenanigans (Shakespeare 2008). May is charismatic, lovable, entertaining and aims to adventure the romantic scene but in fear. Hakim has his African American friend and Neighbour Antwon who keeps on pressuring him to tell May how he feels but to no avail. Generally, people tend to take their time when it comes to love issues but hakim had taken too long and would miss out in the end. Consequently, Hakim seems to take time to compose himself going home and trying out some Shakespeare lines and sometimes-goggling pick-up lines from the internet. Hakim has that confidence and trust in his style of flirting girls to achieve his intentions. In fact, he decides verge a quick study and take the cheesiest line on the internet to ask a person out. One weekend when they were out in the park with May finishing their projects and hanging out Hakim throws in the line and is shy about it (Shakespeare 2008). To his disbelief, May went in for the kiss and told him he had taken too long to notice how she was so into him, they became lovers. The journey to romantic exploration and fantasy fulfilments began after a long time of t Mays’ “hard to get” attitude. Hakim having never kissed a girl became obsessed with the idea and went home dreamy and absorbed in the moment he had with May. When Antwon came back from his districts games he found his friend having a girlfriend but since he knew May’s brothers temper and the fact that May was betrothed to an Asian boyfriend he called Hakim to the side and told him that he only had one problem left.

Ultimately, to convince the brothers and parents of May that he was better than the one they had chosen for May. Hakim having the picture in mind told Antwon he was ready to die for May since he really loved her to death. He be like “am down for my boo dude ama die for her” and Antwon joked about him being whooped by the brothers who knew Tai chi (Shakespeare 2008). Then May came thru by telling Antwon about the situation she had and vowed to stick with Hakim. When the brothers found out, Hakim spent most of his time dodging them so they could not find him. From rumours Hakim received, the brothers were very violent so he laid low. Soon he convinces May to elope after their exams and they agreed and stuck to the plan only to come back to their senses that they had no money to even get a plane ticket. The story ends with them getting together and making ends meet despite the huddles.
