For many years, America has presented itself to the world as an embodiment of democracy. It has been on the forefront in lecturing other nations on their perceived flawed democracy. However, history has proven America wrong based on the double-standards it has demonstrated not only on its politics but also international policy. With regards to politics, America has maintained that governments and leaders must be selected based on the will of the people. However, this is ironical given that cases of gerrymandering and manipulation of boundaries in favor of partisan elections have been witnessed. There is an ongoing case in the Supreme Court regarding gerrymandering that affected Wisconsin (Knapp, 2018).
In a recent election in Venezuela, America raised its voice through its State Department stating that it wanted “a free and fair election involving full participation of all political leaders, the immediate release of all political prisoners, credible international observation, and an independent electoral authority” (Pillar, 2017).Whereas the US calls for the participation of all political leaders, the reality is that in the country, the third party candidate can get almost zero votes when they risk participating. Although it calls for the release of all political prisoners in other countries, her holier than thou president is yet to pardon Leonard Peltier and other leaders.

The US government continues to spend countless amounts of money on international observation and spreading “democracy” across the world. However, the true meaning of democracy as what conforms to the interests of the American authorities. Anything that goes contrary to this is a travesty that amounts to capital punishment. America should perhaps work on its system and put its house in order rather than meddling into the affairs of others. Other than gerrymandering and hypocrisy, the US has been accused of voter suppression in many states. Indeed, America will continue to see the speck in the eyes of other nations but refuses to recognize the log in its own eye.
