The book of Deuteronomy talks about how God commanded obedience from the Israelites. In the chapters four, five and six the message contains reminders of the punishment people got from disobeying God, it also talks about the laws that God gave for them to follow without any additions or subtractions. In chapter four God demands obedience from everyone, that is all Israelites were expected to follow Gods laws and decrees without deviating from them, God commands people to learn, follow his rules keep them in mind and heart and follow them to the end. Chapter five is all about the Ten Commandments, they are the results of the covenant God made with Israelites at Horeb, he spared their lives, therefore, to repay him they were to follow the rules.
The commandments were a symbol of God’s love to humanity then and even today (VanDrunen, 2014). The commandments are to be learned, appreciated and taught to everyone believing in God. Obedience and following the commandments of God is the only way God expected the Israelites to reciprocate his love; he gave them the rules as an extension of his love and assurance that we remain in the covenant. God wants us to obey him because we want to rather than doing it because it is our duty. We should do things out of love instead of obligation. Choosing to follow his commandments should come naturally for believers instead of doing it because it is written in the Bible (VanDrunen, 2014).

The words in Deuteronomy chapter4: 4-5 are a clear indication of God’s love to the Israelites then and to all humanity even today. He shows his promise to all that heed to his word; he gives life to those that follow him and an assurance even in future endeavors. The passage is very powerful because it shows how powerful God is and his love for his people has only one condition obedience. We all get a life and a great future because of his love, and in return he just wants people to hold on to him and follow his laws and decrees.
God is love, his love is unconditional when it comes to those who obey him, he requires little from people, God wants us to follow his commandments, and we shall have everlasting life. In Deuteronomy we also see that God is jealous God, he demands that people worship him alone because he is all powerful, unlike the otherworldly gods. God is love because one of his greatest commandments is to love one another as we love ourselves. The Ten Commandments on stone were just so that we could see them physically and since it is not possible to carry them around he instructed people to learn them by heart so that we have them wherever we go (Radmacher, Allen, and Thomas, 2007). Knowing the commandments by heart ensured that we do not deviate from them because they are embedded in our heart, and we can all pass the message to all including our children and their children. He made sure that the commandments are known to all generations because the Israelites were given the mandate to pass the message to all nations so that very one can see that they worship a great GOD.
God is forgiveness he forgave Israelites even after they decided to worship idols, unlike Moses who found it hard to forgive them simply because they were not patient enough to await his return. God does not look at our past transgressions so long as we approach him humbly confess and ask for forgiveness. God treasures covenant because he said those who stood fast in his word have life, therefore if people keep their promises to him by following his commandments, he rewards them with happier longer lives (Radmacher, Allen, and Thomas, 2007).
