Vietnamese Americans make up one of the largest diasporic community in the United States. They originated from Vietnam. Vietnam has been involved in countless conflicts with China since the 19 th century and this has brought about wars. The continuous war is what made most Vietnamese to migrate and seek refuge in the U.S.

Traditional Vietnamese music continues to be embraced by Vietnamese Americans in the U.S today. It is syncretistic and highly diverse and combines foreign and native influence. Nhạc dân tộc cải biên  is one of the modern genres of Vietnamese folk music. This kind of traditional music is written using the musical notion of the western world.

Vietnamese Americans still embrace their culture and traditions in the diaspora and this is what distinguishes them from Americans and other communities in the U.S. The issue of racism in the U.S has greatly affected Vietnamese Americans. They also experience oppression from Americans. Nhạc dân tộc cải biên  has received serious criticism from purists because its approach of traditional sounds is watered down.

The Chinese traditional music

This is a general genre of the traditional music of China that was established before 1911 C.E. Opera Yayue is a famous genre of the Chinese Traditional music. It is sung in a non-resonant and thin voice. Chinese Americans who migrated to the U.S long time ago introduced the traditional music there. The music is usually played on solo instruments such as a flute, drums, and gongs. The oldest instruments of music from China include gin as well as the bamboo pipes.

The Chinese Americans introduced the Chinese orchestras that traditionally consist of plucked strings, bowed strings, percussion, and woodwinds. They value and embrace their culture in America. Wu Jinglue is one of the famous artists of Chinese traditional music in America. He composed and wrote a song known as “The Sunny Spring.”

Racial discrimination and politics have affected the growth and popularity of Chinese traditional music in the U.S. Chinese artists are not given a level platform like the American artists and this demoralizes most of them.
