Stress is a condition of mental or emotional tension resulting from difficult circumstances. It is a natural response to situations both good and bad that can be either beneficial to health and safety or have a negative impact on the body. Short term stress can easily be dealt with while chronic stress can cause a range of symptoms and diseases affecting our general health and well being. Stress has a wide range of physical and mental effects on behaviors, the body and emotions.

There are several behavioral effects of stress. These effects are determined by the nature of stress and the type of the person involved; stress is individualized and different people have different ways of reacting to the stress. Behavioral effect of stress comes in two stages; the short term and long term behavioral effect. Short term stress leads to automation of behavior while long term stress causes continuous release of hormones and neurochemicals even after stress has been managed. Some individuals opt for negative ways of releasing stress rather than going for stress therapy sessions. They end up indulging into unhealthy behaviors such as substance abuse, immoral sexual behaviors and gambling. Stress affects our speech by releasing hormones that make an individual become anxious causing stammers and stutters.

Stress causes emotional instability as it affects our hormonal system; it makes an individual depressed, frustrated, anxious and easily irritated. In additional, it causes mood swings. When stressed, some people lose weight while others gain more. Those who gain weight eat a lot of food as a way of relieving themselves while weight losers tend to have less appetite due to stress and end up shading some weight. Stress weakens the immune system as it affects the mind which controls the release of antibodies and its mechanism against antigens; this makes one susceptible to a disease.

Stress leads to the release of cortisol, a hormone that regulates the production of body oils by the subcutaneous glands. This makes the skin prone to acne and rashes affecting physical appearances. The hormonal effect of stress also affects sexuality and performance; women produce less estrogen impacting negatively on their sexual desires while men produce more testosterone when under stress hence they are more sexually active than the women.
