The advancement in technology, more so communication, and the onset of social media platforms have created a myriad of concerns for people. Authors Aydogan & Buyukyilmaz (2017) conducted a case study on 487 students undertaking Business Administration at Karabuk University to determine how social media platforms affected the students` psychological states; stress and anxiety levels. While social media has been praised for improving communication and sharing of information instantly, the negative effects of these platforms have generated much attention from researchers. In their findings, the authors noted that stress levels were largely impacted by how the students were engaging within these social media sites. Moreover, anxiety levels among the students increased with the duration spent on social media sites. Despite these findings, the authors note that more research needs to be carried out to examine the perceived activities people do within the cyberspace.
In totality, social media negatively impacts an individual's stress levels and coping. Indeed, stress is part of life, yet social media has been linked to increased stress levels in different ways (Siddiqui & Singh, 2016). Undoubtedly, social media is very addictive, and once people log in to these sites, they spend the majority of their time chatting. If people are denied access to these sites, they develop stress due to their addiction. Anxiety, cyberbullying, and depression are the most significant negative effects of social media, and as such, these sites impact people's daily activities. In essence, people adopt new behaviors from others through social media. Behaviors, for instance, spending excess money on unnecessary items because someone else on Facebook is doing the same, increases stress levels. As these behaviors can be addictive and stressful, cognitive behavioral therapy can be useful in controlling the situation (McCrae, Gettings, & Purssell, 2017). Changing one's behavior is the first step towards reducing anxiety and stress levels associated with social media related activities and behaviors.
