Effects of Technology in the Study of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Screen technology

It alludes that most kids in the world are usually attracted mostly to the screen-based technology. Most of them would spend a bigger fraction of their time watching stuff on the televisions or computers. It is, therefore, important not only to extract the negative aspect from this behaviour but look and formulate and find out the positives that can be incorporated. In most instances, students or kids with the Autism Spectrum Disorders will always feel frustrated being taught within the classroom surroundings in which they are often asked to answer questions by their teachers. But upon realizing that they spend most of their times glued to the screens, teachers have improvised new strategies in which they use to teach the various students with the disorder as they tend to pay most of their attention to the screens. They would also rather prefer being taught through the screen technology as opposed to the classroom environment in which they usually feel frustrated on the event they are unable to answer questions asked of them. It is also argued out that most people with the Autism spectrum disorder are usually more of visual thinkers as opposed to other normal people who would prefer to hear so as to internalize on an issue. To the people with ASD, picture reading is usually their first language as talking is the latter. Technology, therefore, makes the visual images to be more accessible to the various individuals with ASD. Graphics designed within the computer systems are believed to capture the attention of these people. 

Virtual reality

Over the years there has been various development have been made in the technological sector especially in the computer science field. Computer science has developed over the years and at the moment there is the aspect of virtual reality that has been fused into the system. The virtual technology is one that allows a person to have a view of certain things in a three dimension. It’s a type of technology in which people can get stimuli to what they see on the screens despite the fact that they are not real. This, can, however, be included in educating the students with ASD as they can be influenced to grasp whatever is being taught to them as they have been stereotyped to be connected to the screen technology. According to (Goldsmith, & LeBlanc, 2004), virtual reality has often been used as a mode of treatment to some forms of phobias that are exhibited by the various people with Autism spectrum disorder. It even further alludes that young people with autism are more likely to tolerate reality unlike the people with no linkages with autism.

Computer-assisted instructions 

Individuals suffering from Autism spectrum disorder will in most instances always prefer to pay much attention to the computer-assisted instructions as opposed to having individual instructions. They are usually more attentive to the computers than their teachers. This, therefore, implies that it would be wise to incorporate computers in the teaching of students with this kind of disorder. Some of the kids with the autism spectrum disorder who mostly rely on computers for their learning have often been seen to produce better performances unlike when they are only allowed to listen to the teacher’s instructions. Computers can, therefore, be used as good alternative teachers to these students as they do provide predictable answers that are usually fare enough and are not so demanding to the responses that might make the student feel frustrated. More research further tells that some of the people with autism disorder are more likely to lower sounds unlike loud voices from an individual. This, therefore, makes computers to be the best mode they can use in their communication as in most instances they can always adjust the sound volume to meet their preferences. On some instances, a family with an individual having autism disorder may use some technological innovations such as noise alarms that will spontaneously sound the alarm on the event noise is made. Technological improvements on the computer as a science also play an important role in reducing the several procedural steps that are mandatory in the completing a certain task. The computer will in most instances help the kids or learners to pass certain steps while solving some problems which at times may frustrate these children. Computers, will, therefore, make life more bearable for them by giving them the option of bypassing such steps.

Use of applications

Technology in the recent past has also allowed for the creation of various applications that can be incorporated into the learning student of a kid. Most of the kids today get involved in online activities as well as playing too much of video games and it is always difficult for their various parents to discourage them away from such habits. It is even further argued out that too much of video gaming can be detrimental to the child in the aspect that it can make him t be downright autistic. However, such aspects can be used to enhance the study of the kids with autistic disorders. Most of these apps have often been designed in a manner that they incorporate certain languages within them. This might prove to be helpful especially to a kid as he or she has to read the instructions so as to access the various apps and games. In most instances, even in games, you have to read the instructions so as to be able to over to the next level. This, therefore, plays an important role in helping these kids with autistic disorders to be able to learn new languages which are equivalently important for their communication

Biological and genetic aspects

To find out more on autism, humans have often resorted to giving more attention to biological and the genetic make-up of various people. Most researchers believe that the human body usually shows some signs of autism momentarily a child is born and development begins. Detection of autism at the earlier stages of the child’s development usually gives room for early intervention which is rather critical in developmental disorders. Various technological inventions today tend to figure out how autism occurs through methods such as analyzing the general heritage of a certain lineage of people through their genetic make-up. Other technological inventions have been designed in a way that they try to determine certain genetic expressions that may indicate autism within an individual. It is through this that several scientists across the globe have been able to discover the various peptides that responsible for autism in the young ones immediately from the time they are born. Such methods are usually important to so as to detect autism amongst our children at an early age as well as planning on the possible ways the child ought to be handled.

Robot technology

Autism has always been associated with lack of adequate or rather enough stimuli. However, recent technologies show that robots can perform merely all the functions that the humans too can perform. Robots can from time to time be used to bring out the same stimuli a person does such as a touch or the manipulation of a person’s mind. Robots mostly tend to take the place of humans in the society. Robots are believed to give room for more experimental tests to be performed on the various aspects that are usually exhibited by a person with autism such as their social interactive behaviour such as eye contact, joint reference or even the imitation of someone’s ideas (Bölte, Golan, Goodwin, & Zwaigenbaum). On some instances, robots have been made in a manner they are able to represent the natural human interactions of the humans. Most of the modern robots today have been designed in such a way that they are in the resemblance of the child. This, therefore, plays an important role in influencing the child’s interactional behaviour since on most instances they are always expected to communicate with the robots. However, it has also been noted that robots may at times have both positive and negative effects to a person with autism spectrum disorder.

Social media

According to (Shane, & Albert, 2008), children affected by the autism disorder often have the tendency to spend much of their time in individual media activities such as watching the television or rather playing one player video games. In most instances, they usually tend to detach themselves from people and other activities. However, it would be advisable of any parent having a kid affected with autism spectrum disorder too often advise him or her to at least focus on technological inventions that are rather social dimensional. However, social media can also be used as a medium to try addressing some of the issues that affect these people with the autism spectrum disorder. This can be achieved through posting helpful videos on these social platforms in which these individuals can access them and later on improve their social life.

Autism spectrum disorder is actually a form of a disorder that can actually be addressed when the right parameters are put in place. Technological inventions have also played an important role in influencing the improving the social behaviour of the various victims of autism spectrum disorder. However, it is important to take note of the type of technology that that should be made available to an individual with ASD. Such decisions ought to be made by a team of professional members, by the family who may be having direct interaction with the patient or through medical practitioners who may advise on the right technology to be incorporated. It is further noted that the pace at which technology is manifesting itself in our society today is rather rapid and the trend does not show any signs of decline. We, therefore, need to be cautious of the ones we choose.
