One of the very significant responsibilities that public speakers have is to promote diversity. This simply implies appreciating the different backgrounds and perspectives of their audience members. Fostering diversity provides a platform for audience members that are diverse from the speakers to feel a sense of belonging to the entire group. Consequently, they can share their contributions freely to which other members of the audience were not aware. Therefore, is important that the language used to approach the audience is that which does not make them feel alienated from the discussion. Public speakers can build a connection with the audience that gives room for creating trust, relationship, and goodwill. Public speakers can be sure of a positive response from the audience because of the rapport established through fostering diversity.

Public speakers can promote diversity by using inclusive language. They can use responsible language that utilizes inclusionary phrases. In addition, using inclusive language would imply avoiding sexist language. For instance, by including “we” in place of “you,” the speaker makes herself or himself connected to the audience. Public speakers must also desist from hate speech because words have power. They should completely shun from speeches that demean others or humanity through compulsion or intimidation and expressing hatred in their words. Hateful communication or using offensive materials offends the audience.

Public speakers should raise social awareness themselves by educating colleagues on the importance of appreciating others with different racial, gender or cultural standings. They should be involved in campaigns that raise awareness on the need to be considerate and sensitive about others. Lastly, public speakers should embrace respectful free communication. As much as they have the right to speak out their opinions and values to the audience, it must be balanced by their obligation to respect them. The values of the audience members must not be degraded as even opinions can be voiced without offending anyone.
