Health and Physical Education (HPE) in the US started in the 19th century. United States schools abided with European model and added health and physical education to their curriculum. Notably, HPE began in 1820 when learning institutions commenced to concentrate on hygiene training, gymnastics, care, and human body development. Following the civil war, most American states passed laws that demanded all schools to include health and physical education components into their curriculums. However, female from different institutions were not permitted to participate in these competitions until the Federal Education Act was amended in 1970 which outlawed sex-based discrimination.

In the late 20th century, the government reduced its commitment to HPE. Many institutions began to provide different schools that eventually shifted the focus away from health and physical education towards academics. The recession that occurred between 1970 and 1980 made the government cut funding used in health and physical education programs. The recent awareness about children’s attention towards non-physical activities and obesity has prompted the government to bring HPE back into the limelight. This has made the government to re-signal its commitment to HPE by incorporating it again in schools, particularly elementary schools. This is because they are important in the development of a person’s body.
