People have differing tastes in things such as music. A piece of music may be good for one person but a bad taste for another. There are different factors which are used to determine whether it is good or bad. Some of these factors are the way the message being passed; the beats used, the message being passed, age of the listener, and even the artist. Kendrick Lamar’s “humble” is one of the music’s considered to have a good taste while Elephant Man’s “Log On” song has bad taste by the society.
Kendrick Lamar’s “humble” is considered as a piece with good taste. The first thing is the way the song is presented, with clear and understandable words. It means that the music can be listened to by any person despite their age. The piece of music is also carrying a positive message, of warning people against excessive pride and ego. Lamar is asking people to be humble. Lamar even mentions how some humble men such as Obama have succeeded in life. The musical instruments used are not too slow or too fast, and thus, the music is best for any group (Jones, 2018). The song is appropriate for an entire family to listen because the words used are not abusive. There is no band involved in the music which makes it modern and interesting to listen to since no confusion is created with the band. The music is not about drugs and girls as most pieces in contemporary society. It has information that could be used to promote good morals in the community. Kendrick Lamar is one of the best and most recognized musicians, and that is why his music is considered to have good taste and loved by most people.

Elephant Man’s “Log On” song is considered to be bad taste music. The author may consider this piece to have bad taste because of various factors. The language used in the musical cannot be understood. Reggae is deemed to have a good taste only when the message can be heard, and the message understood. Elephant Man’s song, however, uses deep Jamaican words which can be understood by a person with a deep understanding of the language. Therefore, the song cannot be used in public places with different cultures together. The message of the song is outdated because it concentrates on dancing and women, most of the talked topics in music. The bad taste in the song may also be associated with the singer (Buer, 2016). Elephant Man is recognized because of the open use of marijuana. As a singer and celebrity, he is a role model for most youth. Therefore, his behavior may end up misleading most of the young people, and that may make his music to be considered to have bad taste. The music piece may thus be considered to have a negative effect on youth and promoting immorality. The instrumentation used also contributes to the piece of music being considered as bad taste.
Determining whether a piece of music has a good or bad taste in society is determined by lots of factors. Each genre of music is considered favorite by different groups of people. Music piece which has clear messages that can be understood by different cultures and used in public places without creating controversy is considered to have a taste. Good tastes also differ in age as what may be regarded as good music among the youth may not be good for the aged.
