The family literacy program is among many programs provided in the community library. The culturally diverse community raises the need for literacy development through the provision of different resources that support the main objectives of the respective program. As the title suggests, the family literacy program is after encouraging early literacy and language development for children and promote family engagement in the eradication of illiteracy. Storytime is among the elements of the program, encapsulating different activities such as reading stories, singing songs, and playful learning activities. Among the resources provided include babies’ books, storybooks, movies, and computers. This paper presents a discussion on how the resources mentioned above meet the community needs and strengthen the family literacy efforts.

Learning is a crucial aspect of child development. The family literacy program is most active during the early stage of child development since they are still in the learning process. For instance, the Brooklyn Public Library Cypress hill branch located at 1197 Sutter Ave Brooklyn, New York, offers different programs for free. The surrounding community is culturally diverse, encapsulating African Americans, Caribbean people, and a considerable percentage of Indians. The resources provided for the community as a whole supports second language development that improves interaction among the members of the respective community. Also, storytime activities help children meet new friends and improve their social lives.

During the storytime sessions, children are usually accompanied by their parents and caregivers. Consequently, the program enhances parents' and caregiver’s engagement in children’s literacy development. As identified in the storytime, educational resources are commonly used for a child’s literacy and language development. Parents get engaged in literacy practices, including narrating stories to their children. The library provides educational resources, including powerpoint slides, handouts, tip sheets, and brochures that contain stories and alphabets that are necessary for the learning process. After the sessions offered in the libraries, the librarians present the identified resources hence promoting parent engagement.

The family literacy program offers most of the resources for free, which is an added advantage for the community. For instance, the Cypress hills library provides free programs for preschoolers, toddlers, and babies accompanied by their parents and caregivers. This case demonstrates the ease of access for different resources hence supporting the main objectives of the program, which include facilitating literacy and language development for the community. The resources provided are relevant since they support child development. Besides, children learn the language that improves their social life. As identified earlier, the program accommodates members from different societies. Through language development and playful learning activities, children can interact and develop social skills.

Attending the storytime sessions is exciting and engaging. The courses present formal learning opportunities for parents and caregivers that educate them on how to promote literacy and language development for children and support them through the child development stages. In the process, the parents are enlightened on the significance of different learning activities that engage their children and how they develop literacy skills. Through the program, parents and caregivers are aware of varying behavior expectations for their children and build literacy on how to handle them. Parents also get to understand different school routines and develop their children’s readiness for the programs. Typically children at the early stage of learning are under the care of their children. When the parents learn the behaviors of their children through different activities supported by the program, they develop the ability to handle their children and support literacy development as well. In conclusion, the storytime programs generate interests in literacy and language development, engage parents and caregivers in literacy practices, and promote community engagement in literacy and language development.
