What is one significant message that you would like to point out from this essay? Explain why that one stood out for you.
The reading chosen for this paper is The Death of My Father by Steve Martin. Steve uses the narrative to relate various things that his father did for him while he was alive but never recognized them. Ten years after his death, he began realizing how these acts were important. Previously, he had not taken much interest in his father’s deeds. He considered him a strict and harsh father. The most significant message in the story is that people should appreciate efforts of their parents when they are bringing them up. Parents are involved in various small acts that are meant to indicate love. However, most children do not recognize these efforts and only think negatively of their fathers. Even while disciplining a child, parents do it with love.

How effective was this essay? What about the writing worked or didn’t work?
The essay is effective since it is organized to promote suspense. It begins with the climax of the story. The author compares and contrasts the views of other people and his opinion on his dad. The comparison brings him to reality and thus begins recognizing that his father’s efforts made him feel loved but never appreciated. In some instances, he left the opportunity to pass. For example, when his father offered to buy him a tuxedo but he refused.
Point out the best sentence in the narrative and explain why you chose that one.
My most famous line in the reading is “A close friend of mine… said that if I had anything to work out with my parents, I should do it now, because one day that opportunity would be over. I chose the line because it provides a way in which people are supposed to respond to the love shown by their parents.
