Good leadership and management are cultivated through numerous experiences in the workplace. Great leaders possess various qualifications that range from autonomy, accountability, good communication skills, authenticity, conflict resolution, and empathetic among others. The kind of leadership and management culture that an organization posse has a great impact on either retaining or employee turnover. Google like any other organization has a manner in which its leadership and management uses communication to guide the company. Founded by Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Google has continually thrived due to its innovative strategies used by its leaders to relate with employees.

Laszlo Bock, the Senior vice president of Google reveals that the company has over the years employed innovative techniques to engage with its employees. The mode of engagement has not only built transparency, but also openness amongst its employees. Google sets a relaxing environment for all its employees where there is free interaction since the first day at the company. Furthermore, within the first day, the top management makes sure that their employee has access to all the codes of the organization including the most secretive ones (Schwantes, 2016). Such openness in communication has created accountability and responsibility amongst employees.

Another way in which leaders at Google use communication in guiding their organization is by having frequent weekly meetings. During these meetings, the leaders ensure they also attend either physically or through online calls. This sends the message to the employees that even the top management is interested in hearing their views regarding the organization. In addition, the type of leadership style demonstrated shows democracy at Google where the opinion of everyone matters. Involving employees in making crucial decisions for the organization as well as them contributing creates a sense of belonging. Sequentially, this has tremendously improved productivity and margins for Google.

Also, the CEO of the organization Sundar Pichai at one point addressed over fifty thousand employees of the company about an issue on gender. A former employee of the organization, Damore, before being fired had posted a letter to the company complaining of the high number of women working for the organization. According to Damore, 20% was quite high and the perceived Google to be more interested in women than they were in men that had more innovative ideas (Leading 2018). In his speech, Pichai explained to his employees that Damore was fired on the basis of violating the organization’s code of conduct. Due to the harassment via the dory platform, Pichai canceled the meeting. Just like other leaders in the organization, Pichai allowed every employee to air their views about the issue. Over 500 questions were posted anonymously regarding the gender issue topic which is sensitive to the reputation of the organization. Through internal board discussions, the issue was addressed.

In conclusion, the management and leaders at Google have followed the organizational culture of transparency through their innovative communication strategies to guide the company. As discussed in the essay leaders like Bock and Pichai effectively communicate to their employees to keep them aware of the issues affecting the organization. Google uses apps such as Dory, conference calls, and memos to inquire from its employees' various issues affecting the running of the organization. These kinds of communications strategies by leadership and management have made it possible to knit the company back together after being torn apart by controversies. As leaders, they want to make sure all employees have an opportunity where they can voice all their concerns which can be addressed each at a time. The leaders at Google are able to communicate and have created a road map for the future of Google.
