A good human resource department provides an organization with the structure and ability to meet its business objectives and aims. Human resource department is divided into several divisions, for instance, staffing, policy setting, compensation and benefits, employee retention, training, complying with employment regulations, and workers’ rights protection.

The primary function of human resources is recruiting and hiring employees within the organization. The department recognizes open positions and recruits, screens and hires qualified candidates. Each organization has staffing policies that are followed during recruitment as part of the HR responsibilities within an organization (Black, 2011). After hiring, the HR department provides training and development for the new employees for them to become part of the productive team.

The department also deals with all aspects regarding compensation in the organization. It handles payroll and makes sure all employees are paid on time including their benefits and other deductions. The department also deals with pensions, compensations and other fringe benefits (Black, 2011). In addition, the department deals with employee benefits such as health insurance, disability programs as well as wellness programs as part of workers protection within an organization.

The human resource department is also responsible for interpreting and enforcing various regulations and policies associated with employment. Such laws include fair labor standards and work hours standards. It is the responsibility of the HR department to investigate harassment and discrimination cases in the organization to ensure the firm remains compliant with the law (Black, 2011). The department is mandated with coming up with standards or a code of ethics which all employees follow. This ensures standardization and efficiency in the organization. This code also improves employee relations, therefore, increasing production in the organization.

Employees are the pillar of any company; therefore, the HR department is charged with retaining employees in the organization (Black, 2011). Hiring and training new employees can get expensive. The department ensures employees retention by improving working conditions, improving communication between management and employees and fair compensation.
