After conducting an interview with a lady who is a former student at the United States Military Academy (USMA), it came to my surprise that gender discrimination also exists in the disciplined forces. The lady did not hesitate to talk of how she was mistreated in the academy as well as the degradation she faced after joining other troops on the war ground. According to the interviewee, women who make a choice of enrolling to any military branch face sexual harassment during their training period. That is because of the Don’t ask, don’t tell policy that allows people to get attracted to the same gender. However, men in uniform believe that women are not capable of undertaking the hard tasks and routine based duties available in the military. The interviewee terms women in uniform as sex organs. Reason being, their colleagues use them to satisfy their sexual desires in the camp sites. The most suppressing thing to ladies in uniform is that victims reported for sexual harassment are not subject to any punishment except being suspended from duty.

Additionally, the interviewee highlighted another discrimination of being denied an opportunity to work on the front line like males do. It is an experience that made him feel inferior and incapable of performing to her expectation. Instead of being in the battle line, information collected during the interview indicates that she works behind the scenes. The tasks allocated to ladies include receptionists, cooks as well as nurses at medical centers. These jobs require them to stay in one station without heavily engaging in war. Such discriminations are the primary reasons as to why women are losing interest in joining the disciplined forces. As a member of the military, her aim is to protect the country against foreign threats which is contrary to what happens once on the ground.

To relate the interviewee’s experience with the concept learned throughout the course, women in the society are being discriminated as a result of gender inequality. The opportunities allocated to them at a workplace is not the same as those of men. Many people believe that women are not capable of leading organizations to success ( Shusta, 2002) . That has contributed to the denial of top leadership post to females who think they can make a difference. Traditionally, women were categorized as minority both at the family level and the society. They had no right to vote or own properties making them live a life of dependency. Domestic beatings and sexual harassment were also standard operations that caused oppression to women. However, an introduction of women movements in collaboration with human rights organizations created an opportunity for the female gender to speak their voice of freedom. Some laws and regulations were set and implemented to protect women from inhumanity. Despite that, gender inequality is still evident in most institutions including the armed forces.

Literature from other sources gives a statistical estimate of how gender discrimination is enhanced in the military. In 2004, the number of ladies who graduated from the naval academy was 17 percent of the total grandaunts ( Types of Discrimination , 2017) . The number of those who graduated from the Air Force troop’s Academy was a bit higher by 1 percent. That indicates how females are hindered from securing chances in the military academy. Many women in the society might be willing and have the capability of serving the nation in numerous ways. However, the superiority of men is an obstruction towards achieving their end goal ( Types of Discrimination , 2017) . The National Human rights board has stood in their gap to ensure equal chances are offered to all genders. As a result, some women have acquired topmost authority in politics and organizational leadership ( Types of Discrimination , 2017) . Labor laws have also protected women against discrimination at workplace ensuring a favorable working environment for all employees.

Constitutionally, the justice system requires every institution to take into consideration the rights of human beings regardless of the gender ( Shusta, 2002) . The military is also under transformation to embrace equality of gender and eliminate discrimination of females in services. My view on the discouraging experience of ladies in the armed forces is that women ought to be incorporated in similar tasks as men since war is eventually evolving from field work to intelligence ( Shusta, 2002) . Men and women have the same education capability hence they can perform equally given a chance ( Shusta, 2002) . Ultimately, soldiers who are found guilty of mistreating female troops in the camp should not only be suspended but also prosecuted to receive a jail sentence and serve as an example to others. Implementing law and policies that protect people from inhumanity is the only way gender equality can be attained globally. Through the success of women who have got the opportunity to lead in the 21 st century, the female gender has proved to do better than men who have been in power for decades. Therefore, the world is in need for the great minds that focus on development and not self-interests.
