Antiplagiarism software enable users to investigate the originality of text, paragraphs, or entire pieces of written works. For plagiarism to happen, it has to be shown in the absence of acknowledgement that a party passes another’s written thoughts as their own ( Ultius, 2019) . Grammarly and Turnitin are widely used as antiplagiarism checkers. Whereas Turnitin focuses on helping students write original essays, Grammarly is a tool developed for the grammatical rectification and proofreading.
The mission statements show the key difference between the two platforms. Grammarly strives to “improve lives by improving communication” ( Grammarly, 2019, p. 1 ). The goal is to empower writers by offering grammatical recommendations that uphold EAGER (ethical, adaptable, gritty, empathetic, and remarkable) values. On the other hand, Turnitin’s mission is to assist scholars throughout their coursework ( Turnitin, 2019 ). The company teams up with learning institutions to help students cultivate powerful written communication skills that contribute towards academic excellence.

A major similarity is that none of the two platforms is available offline. Users also have to create personalized accounts to access services. Grammarly provides a monthly paid option that may prove costly for most users ( Kumar, 2019 ). Turnitin likewise has premium features, although these are customized for students and professors ( Meo & Talha, 2019) . Nevertheless, the fact that one has to have an active internet connection is unfavorable for users in isolated areas.
In conclusion, although both Grammarly and Turnitin advance antiplagiarism services to writers, each has individual merits and demerits. Grammarly is suited for proofreading and grammatical checks, whereas Turnitin is designed for academic excellence. However, both software have premium plans where users are expected to pay before accessing certain features. On a personal level, I would recommend Grammarly because it focuses on both grammatical and antiplagiarism checking.
